5 Budget-Friendly Ways to Redecorate Your Bedroom

When decorating your apartment, always start with the bedroom.

Why?

The answer is simple. Your bedroom is the most personal room in your home. You spend at least eight hours a night there (hopefully). And if you’re a student, you probably study and take long naps there.

Decorating your bedroom doesn’t have to be spendy. Believe it or not, there are many ways to create the bedroom of your dreams without blowing your entire life savings!

Don't blow your budget on an expensive piece of furniture. Instead, think of affordable ways to bring your apartment to life.

Below, I’ve compiled five tips to help you get started. These tips should provide an excellent starting point for you to create a bedroom you adore.

1. Use Extra Furniture for Seating

If you live in a one-bedroom apartment, you might be tight on space. So your bedroom might double as the living room.

Instead of spending an arm and a leg on expensive furniture, use the furniture you already have.

It’s okay if you have a random chair and bench in your bedroom. Some out-of-place furniture actually looks good sometimes.

Since you’ll probably have some friends over from time to time, adding in more seating is a great idea. Chatting in a comfy bedroom beats hanging out on a cramped sofa in the living room.

To add more seating, put a bench at the end of your bed. Better yet, you can put a reading chair in the corner.

If a friend comes over, it’ll be easy for you to relax on the bed. They can kick their feet up and enjoy the comfy chair.

Plus, it’ll make a room look polished and finished. You’ll be happy you took the time to set up a comfortable place where you can lounge at the end of the day.

2. Update the Bed

One simple and cost-effective way to redesign your bedroom is to update your bed.

Giving your bed a refresh sure beats spending a lot of money on an art piece! If you have some colorful pillow shams you’ve been dying to try out, what are you waiting for? Pull them out and put them to good use! Your revamped pillows will transform your bed with their fun colors and patterns.

If you can’t afford to buy a new comforter or bedspread, don’t fret. It’s easy to update your bed by bringing in a stray blanket from the living room.

For example, you might have a dog-themed blanket tucked away in your closet. Decorating your bed with a pet theme is a lot of fun, so pull that pup-patterned blanket out!

Not into animal patterns? Go with another theme of your choosing. The bed is an often-overlooked element that you can transform into the centerpiece of your room.

3. Create Your Own Art

Artwork can be expensive. Instead of emptying your bank account on a painting, why not create some of your own DIY artwork?

It’s a lot simpler than it sounds. All you need is some paint and a pre-stretched canvas to create an abstract painting that will look like it belongs in a million-dollar mansion.

Or, you might have a friend who is excellent at photography. Ask them if they’d be willing to print you out a few of your favorite pictures. You could shoot some of your own and print them yourself on a desktop printer!

Don’t worry about framing your art prints. Instead, use washi tape to group a few photos on the wall.

Making art is a simple and inexpensive way to decorate your bedroom. Plus, you’ll be proud of yourself for putting your artistic creations on display.

4. Add Fresh Flowers and Plants

Fresh flowers and plants are an easy way to spruce up your space. All you have to do is pick a few wildflowers. They’ll look beautiful when displayed in a vase on your desk.

Studying is such a grind sometimes. But, glancing over at a few houseplants can make a big difference. Calming plants will add color to your bedroom and joy to your soul!

If you’re a busy student, you might question whether you’ll be able to keep the plants alive. Let’s be real; it’s easy to forget about our plants.

To avoid ending up with a shelf full of wilted flowers, go with low-maintenance plants like orchids or Chinese evergreens. That way, you'll be sure to keep those plants around for a while!

5. Focus on Statement Pieces

Less is more in a small apartment. When you’re working with a limited budget, less is truly more.

Instead of feeling like you have to go out and buy major decorative elements, stick to a few key pieces. That doesn’t mean you can’t spend any money, but you may want to think about buying one or two things instead of five.

Let each piece stand on its own to make a bold statement. For example, you might splurge on that velvet armchair you’ve been eyeing at the consignment shop. You might not be able to afford a fancy dresser, but that armchair will look stunning in the corner of your room!

Usually, the bed is the focal point of the bedroom. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t divert the eyes elsewhere. A strategically-placed statement piece in the corner or on the wall can easily change the mood of your room.

Whether you’ve just moved into your first apartment or want to update the one you’ve lived in for years, creating a stunning bedroom is within your reach.

No, it doesn’t cost a fortune to curate an aesthetically pleasing space. All it takes is some time and a bit of imagination. These tips and tricks should help guide you as you decorate to your heart's content.

Now that you’re armed with these expert tips, you should have no problem decorating your bedroom without breaking the bank.
