Looking for ways to reduce your electricity costs? Here are top 5 ways to do it.
Switch to LEDs
LED light bulbs use about 90% less energy compared to incandescent bulbs. The plan is to replace the most used bulbs in your home e.g. those in living areas etc. first. And then replace the rest as they burn out.
You can buy the bulbs in bulk from amazon or any other online shopping sites, and sometimes they come with discounts and coupons too. Buying them in bulk like 1-2 dozen based on your requirements is not a bad idea as these last for years based on your average usage.
Switch to Solar lights outdoors
Another often ignored but fast way to reduce electricity usage is to replace outdoor lighting to solar lights. They absorb the sun's energy during the day and run for free at night—a real bargain. They look good, come in various shapes and sizes, and if bought from good brands will last years. Make sure they are weatherproof. Also, they come a dusk-to-dawn feature where the lights will turn on automatically around sunset timings. You can also but them motion detection capable.
Overall, they will reduce your electricity bill a lot while at the same time adding that nice touch to your house and property.
Reduce hot water and heated dry option in your appliances
Couple of simple steps here.
If possible don’t use hot water while washing clothes. That will save 90% electricity usage.
Whenever weather permits, set up a clothesline in your backyard. This is an excellent cost-effective way of drying anything, naturally and saving you those hard-earned dollar bills.
Also don’t use heated dry in your dishwashers. Once cleaning is done, just open the door, and the rest will be taken care, simple and effective.
Get smart with devices and appliances
The entire electronics world changes very fast. Couple of things here –
Whenever possible replace your old appliances with newer energy star models which will reduce your electricity consumption considerably.
Many of the appliances and devices come with energy savings settings, for example, monitors can go to energy save mode when not used for certain amount of time etc. Use these settings as much as you can.
Many times, devices keep on using electricity even after we are not using them anymore, e.g. TV, sound systems. You can try to plug these items into one power strip and then turn them off before going to bed or when not in use.
In today’s age of smart home, you can program almost everything. Of course, get a smart thermostat, while at the same time program other devices to automatically turn on or off only when needed. If available, take advantage of the idle times, which will turn off the device or send it to energy saving mode when not used for a certain amount of time.
Utilize what your electric company offers
Many times, we just set the electricity bill payment in auto mode and forget completely about the electricity company. So, stay in touch with them by either subscribing to their newsletter or occasionally vising their website to find out the latest and greatest they are offering.
Check out for any new plans, or off-peak rates or other plan and use those to your advantage e.g. do your laundry or dishwashing during off-peak hours.
Many companies provide free energy audit, take it for sure. This may surprisingly identify issues with weather stripping, or insulation and more. Many items will be small but effective, and you can just but the things from Amazon and fix them yourselves on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
