4 Tips to Improve Your Writing Space…

And Productivity

There is no perfect writing space, but your dedicated writing escape should define you.

Define Me, You Say

This may sound bizarre to some but various writers can be productive in a hot mess as their creative minds match that hot mess. This type of writer may seem to be disorganized but in truth, they know exactly where everything is and if you so much as move a paper clip, they would yell “thief.” Our eyes can deceive us as we all have a different style and speed.

There exists an extreme opposite to the hot mess-type (both internally and physically) – the writer who must have clutter in its place – basically removed. Clutter makes their minds melt. Not to the point of being OCD but to the extent that their work space must be cleared of all distractions and clutter or writing will have to wait for another day.

Personally, clutter does not melt my mind and I actually prefer being surrounded by my favorite things as it kick starts my creative juices. I am better adjusted when my surroundings match my unique self with those dreams and warm memories reminding me of why I cultivate creative thoughts, books and blogs.

There is one wall inside my writing cave that is covered with the true-crime stories I have written for the news along with books I have written, composed, published and edited. Throughout the colorful walls are my children’s artwork with memories of their favorite stuffed animals from years past. The flashbacks hit me when I walk into my writing cave. Family pictures adorn empty spaces with a portable fireplace and comfy lounging chair when I need to sit and regroup my tangled thoughts.

My writing style is in-between a hot mess and an organized magician, but I tend to lean on being a hot mess both inside and out. I am okay with that and embrace who I am as it has not deterred me from creating successful writing projects.

Define your writing style and pace. It is key to never be too hard on yourself or feel you have to fit within a certain type of mold as a writer. If you need a near-flawless writing space, grab the dust buster and trash can and do you, while messy creatives should continue to respect their style as their habits have made them successful as well.

Location, Location, Location

Whether you’re a journalist, author, blogger or writer of any kind – just like our unique selves, our homes are different sizes and shapes. What if you do not have an extra room to dedicate for your writing escape?

Dedicate a space – even the smallest of nooks can greatly benefit your need to release that fantasy novel, blog or any writing project. Carve out a place inside your home with the basics - comfortable chair, desk, computer, office essentials, etc. and use a wall divider screen to create your own private writing space.

A location near a window is best as you can reap the benefits of the natural lighting. Add a few of your favorite things, dreams, and memories – just experiment and go for it!

Change the Scenery

While I am grateful for a dedicated writing space inside my home, there are times I need to change the scenery. This is true with monotony in our lives which can compound over time; change can be a refreshing option and even reset our minds.

For the writers that need to minimize distraction and avoid clutter, your local library is an ideal location. Be prepared to either hold your incoming calls or take calls at a backup location as libraries require quiet time. Many libraries allow you to reserve a work space and usually offer free speedy Wi-Fi along with the availability of endless resources.

Another change-of-scenery option is your local coffee shop. A java hut can be especially beneficial as there is no lack of caffeine to perk your senses and creative mind – nearby tasty pastries are a nice added touch, too.

Find yourself a table with an outlet access and tackle your writing projects, being mindful not to overstay your welcome as other patrons may be in need of a table. It wouldn’t hurt to put in a second order and add a generous tip!

Comfort Is Not Overrated

Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, massive amounts of office workers are now working from home, making comfort a high priority for many. Being several of us workers are spending much more time at home, sitting on an uncomfortable kitchen chair at the table may not result in long term productivity. When your body and mind are at ease, the rest will fall into place.

Here are a few comforting office essentials that come to mind.

1. A comfortable chair

2. Position your laptop to your needs (can do wonders for your wrist)

3. Standing Desk

4. Memory foam wrist rest

5. Desk lamp

6. Desk organizer

7. Ergonomic foot rest

8. Natural light (proven to improve productivity)

Choices of comfort can be contrasting for every individual and writers are no different. Make your space comfortable for you. Think of your writing space as your support team. Carry on fellow writers. You can do this!
