10 wine mistakes almost everyone makes
And how to fix them
Whether you’re just getting into wine, have been drinking it for years without knowing much about it, or consider yourself a wine connoisseur, here are some tips to consider:
1) Storing bottles upright, for long periods
If the bottle is corked, storing it upright can dry out the cork allowing air in. Storing them on their side prevents this, screw caps are fine upright.
2) Chilling whites in the fridge too much
You can chill a white wine too much. Some whites are best served a little warmer than fridge temperature. The cold can actually dull the flavours and aroma, so double-check the serving temperature and take them out of the fridge a little before serving.
3) Red wine temperatures
Similarly, some reds are best served slightly cooler than room temperature. Best to check the serving temp, if it’s cooler, store in the fridge for 10-20 minutes.
4) Buying the same wine
It’s tempting to stick with what you know and like, but this approach can prevent you from discovering potential new favourites. Whether you’re at a restaurant, bar or supermarket it doesn’t hurt to ask for a recommendation within the same price range or to try a different grape. Many people feel embarrassed to ask, but it’s the easiest way to find something good.
5) Holding the bowl of the glass
When drinking wine, especially whites, it’s important not to hold the bowl of the glass, as your hand will warm the wine. Instead, hold the stem so the temperature of the wine stays right for longer.
6) Wine pairing
It’s easy to assume all whites go with fish and all reds go with meat, but you’ve also got to consider the weight of the wine and the sauce. A light red could work with a salmon dish, while a rich white could pair well with creamy chicken.
7) Letting reds “breathe”
Young, bold reds can benefit from being opened a little while before serving or pouring in the glass. Letting it sit there for a short while helps, but older or more delicate reds need only a quick swirl in the glass for about 30 seconds.
8) Not trusting your own taste
It’s easy to follow experts and reviews, but the best wine is simply the one that you enjoy drinking. If you like it that’s all that matters. Trust your palate, take notes of what you like and why, this will help you find more wines that you like over time.
9) Storing wine in the kitchen
A kitchen’s temperature can fluctuate due to cooking and sunlight. This constant change can speed up aging and ruin the wine, so it’s best to store bottles in a dark cupboard, basement, or a dedicated wine rack, away from any heat sources. A steady cool temperature is what you want.
10) Letting leftover wine sit for days
Oxygen can ruin wine quickly after it’s been opened. Reds tend to last longer than whites, but for both types, it’s best to re-cork or screw the cap back on as soon as possible and store in the fridge. Reds can typically go unrefrigerated for a couple days, but it’s still best to chill them. When you’re ready to drink the left over red, just take it out of the fridge 10-15 minutes beforehand to let it warm up slightly.
Fixing a few common habits can make every bottle taste better — without spending any more. Try focusing on just one or two at a time and see if you notice a difference.
