Need some inspiration to create a free-spirited, world traveler, Stevie Nicks-inspired nook? Getting the vintage boho style is all about unique finds and cozy decor. All that's needed is a savvy eye and a few eclectic sources like Goodwill, globe-trotting adventures, and weekend trips to the woods.

It's easy to support the community and save the planet by reusing treasures from thrift stores. Garage sales, old book shops, flea markets, and even estate sales are perfect for vintage finds. Of course, a boho household isn't complete without a few houseplants. Local greenhouses or grocery stores provide some easy-to-care-for greenery like snake plants, monstera, or pathos. Plus, there's that online gem, ETSY, or Pinterest for even more bohemian ideas.

1. Brass is relatively easy to come by at thrift stores or estate sales. A brass bowl is a perfect addition to an entryway as a catch-all for keys, spare change, and wallets. Pair a vintage painted brass platter with thick vanilla candles on a coffee table. A collection of oil lamps, vases, or candlesticks find the perfect home lined up on a high shelf in the living room. Cleaning brass is easy, or it looks great with an antique, faded finish.

2. Two words: Macrame and Fringe. Inexpensive macrame items are easy to find, or there are easy-to-follow tutorials online. Flea markets are overflowing with vintage fringed scarves to drape on chairs, tables, and bedposts. Also, a well-placed fringed retro wool blanket encourages snuggle time with popcorn and a movie like Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous."

3. Bring nature inside. Houseplants are great for decor and indoor air quality. Try adding a bonsai tree or a succulent for low-maintenance indoor plant options. Branches, rocks, acorns, feathers, and other woodland finds displayed in glass bottles on windowsills tell of sojourns into nature. Drape necklaces from dainty hooks screwed into a white birch branch and hung from twine! A big chunk of rose quartz is perfect for a bedside table. Metaphysically speaking, black tourmaline is good for blocking electromagnetic waves, so it's ideal for an office or plopped right on top of a desk. A small tabletop fountain also keeps the good energy flowing.

4. Textiles such as tapestries, '70s crocheted afghans, handmade quilts, and deeply hued pillows all add a rich texture to a home. Large cushions or pillows placed on the floor invite sipping a frothy chai while listening to Pink Floyd on vinyl. A fluffy tufted comforter or multi-colored quilt with piles of thick pillows upon an heirloom rod iron bed beckons for a re-reading of "Arabian Nights."

5. Never underestimate the ambient power of good lighting to highlight all of the vintage treasures in a boho-inspired house. Natural light is essential for houseplants and occupants. The sun shines bright through light-toned blinds or curtains. Muted pastels open up spaces such as a bedroom or kitchen and give a relaxed vibe to any room. A good set of twinkle string lights are perfect for stargazing in bed.

6. Items from around the world. Crystal from Italy can have a new life as a candy dish. What gallery wall is complete without a souvenir plate from Ireland? A globe found at Goodwill, cut in half, is now a pendant light in a reading nook. That framed postcard from Greece is the perfect addition to a bookshelf. Display an inherited coin collection and those old subway tokens in a small dish. Worldy treasures can be items that represent travels, past, present, and future.

7. Put a bird on it. One bird word: OWLS. Vintage-looking owl candles are easy to find at retail stores, and real vintage ones hang out at thrift stores in the country and the city. A funky collection of owls perched on a shelf would be wise. Limiting it to one or two well-placed owls might be better. Of course, other birds are good too, but owls are a hoot.

8. Unfinished and distressed is the way to go. A scuffed trunk makes the perfect upcycled coffee table with wheels or feet. Mismatched chairs welcome guests around a table filled with tapas and dark wine on a Midsummer's Eve. End tables, cabinets, or walls, painted in bold colors like turquoise, wine, and tangerine, lend to a feeling of selling wares out of the back of a traveling caravan during an art festival.

9. Unique, funky, and durable vintage mugs and dishes are plentiful at second-hand shops. The more mismatched the collection, the better. People often donate one-of-a-kind pottery mugs and bowls to thrift stores. Items like milk glass, fire king, and vintage Corning Ware are perfect to line cupboards in the kitchen.

10. Rugs add depth and warmth to spaces. A magic carpet ride purchase begins at a market in Jordan or an annual festival in the park and ends in an entryway of an apartment in Nebraska. Layering rugs over already existing carpet is one way to add a well-traveled look to any room. A rug unfurled across a floor is the perfect place to lounge with guests over a smooth garlic hummus and falafel platter.

Each boho house is as unique as the people living there. It's the place to come for comfy pillows and hot cocoa in a mug that says "Surf Hawaii." Or it's the perfect spot to curl up with a book or a pet on an overstuffed deep purple meditation cushion. The tapestry hung above the bed in the spare bedroom can greet guests like the morning sunshine. It does take patience and a keen eye to find some of these treasures, but together they make a unique boho cozy, up-cycled pad.
