High pressure boilers have become a common sight in the industry today and maintaining a High Pressure Steam Boiler isn't an easy task, but can rid you of a lot of issues that take up money and time.

Low Water Levels

Boiler temperatures can rise significantly after combustion, and water can be a key factor that contributes to withstand the same. Issues like melting and damaging steel tubes during high boiler temperatures can occur because of low water levels.

A high pressure steam boiler with a modular design is installed with low-water trip switches for monitoring the water level. But the catch is that even with low water level switches, one still cannot entirely make sure that the water level is balanced since it is a mixture of water and steam bubbles at an unstable level. Levels can differ due to the shrinking and swelling that occurs because of pressure changes, firing rate changes, and the addition of cold feedwater.

Fuel Explosions

One of the most dangerous effects of neglecting regular boiler maintenance for high pressure boilers is fuel explosion. These can be prevented with appropriate methods and timely maintenance.

Boiler Failures

These generally resulted because of low water levels, poor feedwater quality, or due to fuel explosions. It can even threaten the safety of the process plant and also the operating personnel.

Quality of Feedwater

Treating feedwater eliminates two factors that can cause problems with high pressure boilers, which are corrosion and waterside. The water in the boiler gets vaporized into steam and deposits solid in the form of a scale or buildup in the area where heat gets transferred. This buildup results in producing an insulating layer that disturbs the ability of water to absorb heat from the surface of the tube.

If left unchecked for a while, it results in localized overheating of the tube and eventually can lead to boiler failure. Apart from that, low water levels or poor water quality can lead to a steam explosion occurring because of overheated parts' sudden failure under high pressure. Steam explosions can lead to ambient conditions of heat and decreased oxygen levels that go below the survivable limit.

It has contaminators including oxygen, oil, and excess chemicals that are used for treating water, different metals, and chemical compounds. Low quality and corrosion because of the same can lead to instant damage and mishap.

Things can go south real quick if there is either any acidic or caustic element in boilers. With regular maintenance of a high pressure steam boiler, the chances of damage decrease significantly.

Blowdown Problems

Effective blowdown practices are important for maintaining high pressure boilers. Appropriate continuous blowdown and regular intermittent blowdown can reduce the concentration of undesired solids in the steam boiler. The main idea behind the blowdown practice is to maintain the solid concentration in boiler water within acceptable limits.

This blowdown rate depends on a number of factors, which include the likes of total dissolved solids, silica, suspended soils, and alkalinity. If the boiler water exceeded the given limit, there is a high chance that it may lead to sludge and scale formation, where moisture gets carried over due to foaming, corrosion, and other performance-related issues from the separation of the steam drum. These are normally performed for reducing the solid concentrations in the boiler water immediately.

Such practices for a high pressure steam boiler should be carried out with precision and care. Poor blowdown practices can cause regular failure of the water columns.
