When Honest Criticism Became My Greatest Blessing

From feeling invisible and giving up writing,to learning the most important lesson of my writing journey

A kitchen table, a fresh perspective and the blessing of honest feedback

For months, I poured my whole heart into every word I wrote. Every story carried my real life experiences, my feelings,my memories and my honest thoughts. I felt so proud and happy that finally, after yeras of just being wife and mother,I was doing something just for myself. It gave me joy, voice and purpose and I truely believed my words would reach people, touch hearts and connect with readers everywhere.

But reality turned out very differently.

Months after months,I published story after story....yet hardly anyone read them. My views barely crossed 15 to20 and those few reads were only from closest familymembers...my brother, my sister in law and few dear friends who supported me out of love, no matter what I wrote. Strangerss never found me, no body comment except them and there was absolutely no response from the wider world.

Slowly, quietly, it began hurting me deeply.

I looked at other writers..people sharing similar stories like me and saw hundred of reads, lovely comments and appreciation pouring in. Meanwhile mine sat there almost unseen, feeling like that they didn't matter at all. Inside my heart, questions started rising again and again:"Am I not good enough? Is my writing boring?Whudoesn't anyone care about what I have to say?"

The joy I once fely slowly turned into heaviness and sadness. I started feeling depressed and discourged, feeling like my hardwork was going completely to waste. I honestly had no idea where I was going wrong or what I needed to change. Eventually, with heavy, I stopped publishing on the platforms completely. I thought..."Maybe writing is not for me at all".

Yet even though I stopped sharing publicly, I couldn't stop writing completely.Writing had become part of who I was; my heart and mind still needed to express themselves. So quietly,I kept writing everything down in my personal diary...only for myself, never shown to anyone else.

Then one simple thought crossed my mind: "Why don't I send my latest writing to my siser in law? Atleast I will get more read"

I sent the stories our WhatsApp, asking her kindly to read them and share her views and if possible , to leave comment on my page too.

A little while later, her reply came thorough. She said she liked my stories, but then she wrote down clearly and honestly....exact where I was weak, exactly where my writing felt short, exactly which parts were confusing or difficult to read. She pointed out spelling mistake, weak sentences structure, unclear messages and so many things that I had never noticed myself.

At first,I just read it quickly and thought..okay, noted. But later something pulled me back, I read her message again, slowly and carefully..and suddenly everything clicked into place.

For months I was waiting for praise, love and compliments..things everyone is always ready to give you, things that feel warm but keep you exactly where you are. But here was someone brave enough and kind enough to show me exactly where I was lacking, exactly what needed fixing, exactly how I could grow and improve. She was not criticising me to hurt me..she was guiding me, helping me and giving me the greatest gift of all...yes the bitter truth.

From that exact moment, everything changed for me. I realised clearly:The person who criticises you honestly is never against you..they are actually your true helper and biggest supporter.

Because of her, I started rewriting, correctly, learning and polishing every single story. Today everything Iam doing, every improvement, every new step I take is because she cared enough to tell me the truth.

This journey taught me a lesson I will keep close forever:Praise make us feel good, but honest feedback make us grow. And sometimes the hardest words to hear are exactly the ones we need the most
