What Working at a Theatre Is Really Like

I've been working at a theatre for about three years now, supporting myself through college. It's easy, flexible hours, and I get to watch some great shows. No, I do not work at a movie theatre. I get to watch shows like Dear Evan Hansen, Kinky Boots, etc... Everything about the job is easy but the most difficult part of the job is dealing with the patrons. I don’t know what it is about the theatre and the people who go to them, but it’s not fun.

Here’s a list of things you should double check before coming:

1. When you go to the theatre please be sure you double check, you’re attending the right time, show and place!

I can’t believe how many people buy tickets for a theatre hundreds of miles away and not realize it. We are in California NOT New York. If you bought a ticket for a certain day and time, make sure you come that day and time not two weeks after the fact! Maybe you can get a refund or not, either way it’s not my fault.

2. Don’t get so upset over something out of our control or we won’t want to help!

We are very understanding we know that somethings don’t always go as planned. The person next to you keeps taking out their phone, the person in front of you is too tall, or the drunk lady two rows down keeps talking to her friend you could hear her. So many things are out of our control and we try our best to make your visit as pleasant as possible. If you come up to us angry about any of these things, we aren’t going to want to help you. We will because it’s our job, but we won’t want to.

3. Don’t try and be funny.

Some people make some DUMB jokes. It was funny the first couple of times, but after the 10th time it’s not so funny. You are not the first clever person who came up with a pun for my name. I’m sorry if I’m not going to laugh at your joke, it just when you’ve heard it 100 times it gets a little old. We already deal with really mean people, please don’t try and make it “better” because it doesn’t. The only person who laughs is you and it makes it very awkward. You’re trying to be nice, I get it but making fun of my name isn’t nice, just stop. I can’t tell you how many people go through this, it’s not funny.

4. I did not design this building stop acting like I did.

There are some things you don’t like about the theatre; the seats are small and uncomfortable. I get it, its annoying and I’ll tell you that we have some extra seat cushions if that helps. If it doesn’t, I’m sorry, but don’t get mad at me because someone else decided on those seats. We really do want to make your time with us the best it could be.

There are so many stories of people being stupid, I swear people forget their brains when they go out. Don’t be one of those people who tries to come in with a ticket for the wrong day. Do people not double check their tickets or anything anymore? It’s extremely hard to stay calm when you're being yelled at for their own mistake, the stupidity sometimes is unbelievable. There are so many things that can surprisingly go wrong at the theatre, so many stories. I’ve decided I would like to share some of those stories soon.
