What is affiliate marketing?

This is a pretty complicated topic, which I’ll try to cover briefly, but a lot of the details are left to the respective businesses and organizations. For example, affiliates focus on helping businesses gain more customers, while marketers focus on building sales. That is a generalization that makes everyone happy, but it depends on the vendor.

Affiliate marketing is a means to an end: Ultimately, you are helping the merchant gain more business.

It is a paid relationship with an organization that wants to sell your products or services. The relationship is paid: You’re paying the vendor either in free products or in money.

You are the customer, not the vendor. You are a customer of the vendor, not the vendor’s affiliate program.

Marketers refer to this relationship as an affiliate program: You are an affiliate for the vendor’s program, not of the vendor itself. In other words, you’re not donating to the vendor, you’re buying products that the vendor recommends.

An affiliate program usually runs a background process to determine which products to recommend. Those products must be recommended, even if they don’t offer the same value to you.

If you’re a blogger with a decent audience, you could theoretically charge an affiliate fee, but most businesses that have an affiliate program don’t.

Most businesses are familiar with affiliate programs for other products. For example, if you sell golf clubs, your affiliate program would probably refer you to golf courses or golf balls, which would be similar to the golf ball merchants we discussed in the post linking affiliate opportunities.

You are buying products, which are in a way a necessary component for the vendor, as it means the vendor is selling something. For a lot of business owners, it may seem like the vendor’s program is a way to sell you their products, rather than an affiliate program. That isn’t necessarily true. It’s an affiliate program that does exactly what it says: It helps you find different products to buy for a small fee, which in turn helps the vendor increase their sales.

If you’re an affiliate marketer, you’re simply helping the vendor achieve their business goals. There is no obligation for you to recommend products to your readers. That’s how the free-swinging wheel of marketing works. When you recommend a product, you may not end up recommending everything. It depends on your brand and your audience.

The affiliate relationship isn’t quite like a merchant-affiliate relationship, but it can work like it, as well.

Whether you’re a blogger or an affiliate marketer, the advantages can be pretty incredible. At the very least, you’re taking a much more proactive role in marketing your business. You’re helping the vendor sell products, which means your readers are getting more of your products, which means more sales.

On the other hand, if you’re going to be selling products or services, you can make a lot of money, but you’ll have to work with a business that is interested in sharing the wealth.

What is a marketing consultant or a consultant, anyway?

A marketing consultant is someone who focuses on helping businesses or organizations accomplish their marketing goals.

Someone who focuses on getting the job done, not marketing your products.

The consultant is paid through a business’ marketing budget or sales commission, rather than having an affiliate relationship with a vendor.

There are many other aspects to a consultant: You can be a consultant to companies, to the media, or social media and blogging groups. That means you’re working with many other businesses to help them accomplish their goals.

If you have specific knowledge of a business’ needs, you could theoretically recommend a product, as I did above with golf balls and golf clubs.

You can also help a business develop new marketing plans, based on the strategies they’re using today. That could include anything from brochures to social media campaigns.

On the other hand, if you’re helping a business with a marketing strategy, it can be helpful to have an affiliate relationship with them, because that’s where you can gain an advantage over a lot of your competitors.

You’re focused on your business’s goals. You’re writing about business topics, not promoting products. You’re researching competitors and staying in front of the market, rather than promoting the product.

Your blog isn’t designed to be a business-centric blog or blog about something other than your business. You don’t focus on your product as much.
