Differences in between

Vocal Media and Medium are both content publishing platforms, but they have several key differences. Here are 10 main distinctions between the two:

1. Payment Model:

- Vocal Media:

Vocal Media has a pay-per-view model. Writers earn money based on the number of reads and engagement their stories receive.

- Medium:

Medium operates on a subscription model. Readers pay a monthly fee for access to content, and writers can earn money based on the time Medium members spend reading their stories.

2. Content Ownership:

- Vocal Media:

Writers retain ownership of their content, and Vocal Media has a non-exclusive license to host it.

- Medium:

Writers also retain ownership of their content on Medium.

3. Earnings Structure:

- Vocal Media:

Writers on Vocal Media earn money through the Vocal+ program, which is based on reads and audience engagement.

- Medium:

Medium uses a Partner Program where writers earn money based on reading time from Medium subscribers.

4. Editorial Control:

- Vocal Media:

Vocal editors review and curate stories for publication in Vocal Communities.

- Medium:

Writers can publish directly on Medium without prior editorial review.

5. Payment Threshold:

- Vocal Media:

Writers must accumulate a minimum earnings threshold before they can withdraw money.

- Medium:

Medium has a fixed payout schedule for writers based on their monthly earnings.

6. Accessibility:

- Vocal Media:

Access to Vocal Media's Vocal+ program is open to writers from various countries.

- Medium:

Medium's Partner Program was initially available to writers in the United States, but it has expanded to include more countries over time.

7. Customization:

- Vocal Media:

Writers have less control over the design and layout of their stories.

- Medium:

Medium offers more formatting and customization options for writers.

8. Distribution:

- Vocal Media:

Vocal Media has a limited distribution network and mainly relies on its website.

- Medium:

Medium has a wider distribution network, including the Medium app and partner publications.

9. Paywall:

- Vocal Media:

Vocal does not have a paywall for readers; it's free to access.

- Medium:

Medium uses a paywall where some content is behind a subscription paywall and accessible to paying members only.

10. Community Engagement:

-Vocal Media:

Vocal has a system of Vocal Communities where stories are grouped by topic.

- Medium:

Medium focuses on personalized content recommendations and engagement within its platform.

11. Vocal Challenges:

- Vocal Media:

Vocal frequently hosts writing challenges with cash prizes. These challenges encourage writers to create content around specific themes or topics and compete for rewards.

- Medium:

Medium doesn't have structured writing challenges with cash prizes like Vocal does. Writers on Medium can earn money based on reading time from subscribers, but the platform doesn't host themed challenges.

12. Audience Engagement:

- Vocal Media:

Vocal emphasizes audience engagement through tips (Vocal's form of likes), reads, and interactions with readers.

- Medium:

While Medium values audience engagement, its payment model is primarily based on the time subscribers spend reading, which can be seen as a different approach to rewarding writers.

13. Writer Communities:

- Vocal Media:

Vocal features writer communities that writers can join based on their interests and topics. These communities provide a sense of belonging and shared interests.

- Medium:

While Medium doesn't have writer communities in the same way, it offers a vast range of publications and individual writers with various niches.

It's important to consider these differences when choosing a platform for your writing, as they can affect your experience and earnings as a writer.

Vocal Media's challenges and rewards system, in particular, make it stand out for writers who enjoy competition and themed writing opportunities.

Medium's subscription model may be more appealing to writers who prefer a steady, passive income based on reading time.

Gotta say I prefer Medium for its distribution but Vocal for its community! Feels more homely here.
