What is Short Term Accommodation?

A person with a disability can benefit from short-term housing by being able to travel, gain more independence, interact with new people, and learn new skills while still having their support requirements taken care of. The Short Term Accommodation service of the MyLifeMyWay is staffed around-the-clock, every day of the week, by experts in disability support.

There are several reasons why short-term housing is fantastic. As a person transitions to Support Independent Living, planned recurring stays can assist them gain more independence. They can also provide a place for a person to remain if their primary caretaker is temporarily unable to look after them.

We recognise that some persons with disabilities wish to spend as much time as possible living in their families' homes. In fact, we have a person who is well into their 60s who uses short-term housing. These persons can practise living independently while staying in short-term housing before returning to the family home at the end of their stay.

Family travellers will also appreciate short-term lodging. Carers are more likely to have health problems as they get older. When or if they need to go to the hospital or take some time off to recover, short-term housing enables them to put their caring obligations to the side.

What distinguishes respite from short-term housing? Just a new name, or more?

While MyLifeMyWay still mostly provides the same service under the "Short Term Accommodation" heading as it did under the "Respite" heading, several of our service objectives have changed. In the past, respite care emphasised the break that the main carer had as a result of the stay.

The emphasis now is on the advantages of staying in short-term housing for a person with a disability. The major objectives of a stay in a short-term accommodation for the people who utilise MyLifeMyWay service include improving life skills, gaining independence, reaching NDIS plan goals, and meeting new peers with similar interests.

Short Term Accommodation is an excellent chance for us to assist capacity building in individuals with disabilities, their families and carers, which is another important component of the NDIS.

Who is eligible?

Children between the ages of 8 and 18 as well as adults with a wide range of support requirements are offered short-term housing through MyLifeMyWay.

The "Core Supports" section of their NDIS plans provides financing for the majority of persons who use our short-term housing services, but we also collaborate with other funding sources.

Those who use an NDIS plan to get short-term housing must be careful to discuss their goals for the accommodation during planning sessions and to articulate their need for it. These planning discussions are an excellent chance to examine all facets of a person's life and how short-term housing might support them in developing capacity and achieving their objectives.

Our programmes and employees are knowledgeable and well-equipped to serve persons with vulnerable health due to our long history of serving people with MyLifeMyWay. Additionally, our organisation has inherited a number of former Family and Community programmes (FACS)/Ageing, Disability & Home Care (ADHC) programmes, making it well-suited to work with clients who require more specialised care and challenging conduct.
