Trump Claims Dual Victory at Bedminster, Attributes Win to ‘TALENT’ Over Practice

The 80-year-old President won both the Senior and Super Senior Club Championships at his New Jersey course, dismissing critics and crediting his natural ability despite a busy presidential schedule

President Donald Trump has added another trophy to his collection, claiming victory in both the Senior and Super Senior Club Championships at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey over the weekend. In a triumphant post on Truth Social on Sunday, August 2, the 80-year-old president attributed his success not to hours of practice, but to innate skill, writing, “It’s called TALENT, and I have it, and they don’t!”

Trump stated that he shot a two-under-par 70 on the Tom Fazio-designed course, sharing a video of what he described as his “winning shot.” He emphasized that his victory was achieved despite significant distractions from his duties as commander-in-chief.

“I won with a score of 70, and am so honored in that, unlike the rest of the field, I’m given very little time to practice, because I’m focused on many other things,” Trump wrote. He also extended congratulations to the other competitors who participated in the club championships, though his primary message remained one of self-assured dominance.

A Familiar Victory Lap

This latest win continues a pattern for the president, who has frequently highlighted his prowess on the links at courses bearing his name. Trump was also crowned the Senior Men’s Club winner at Bedminster in both 2023 and 2024. The Bedminster property, one of several Trump-owned golf clubs where he regularly plays, has hosted numerous high-profile events, including professional tournaments and LIV Golf competitions.

For Trump, golf remains one of his most visible personal pastimes, serving as both a recreational outlet and a stage for public displays of vitality. His social media posts often reflect his longstanding enthusiasm for the sport, framing his performance as a testament to his enduring energy and competitive spirit.

Critics Question Legitimacy

However, Trump’s golfing achievements have long been a subject of debate and scrutiny. Critics and sportswriters have repeatedly questioned the legitimacy of victories occurring at clubs he owns and operates.

Rick Reilly, author of Commander in Cheat, has been one of the most vocal skeptics. In a March 2024 appearance on Deadline White House, Reilly recounted conversations with the former president about how he secures these titles.

“I know this because when I play with him, he goes, ‘You know what I do to win these championships, don’t ya?’ and I go, ‘Please tell me. Give it to me.’ And he goes, ‘Anytime I buy a new course, I play the first round all by myself, and then I declare myself the club champion,’” Reilly said. “So that’s what kind of guy this is.”

The controversy often centers on the lack of independent oversight in club-level tournaments at private properties, leading some to view the titles as ceremonial rather than competitive. Additionally, Trump’s golfing habits have drawn political criticism, with opponents arguing that his frequent trips to the course detract from his presidential responsibilities a claim Trump directly addressed in his recent post by citing his lack of practice time.

Supporters Praise His Skill

Despite the skepticism, those who have played with or observed Trump closely defend his abilities. John Nieporte, director of golf at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, and a former caddie for the president, has praised Trump’s game.

“I’ve seen him win club championships sinking 60-foot putts,” Nieporte told The Times. “I’ve seen him shoot 66 out here on this golf course.”

Supporters argue that Trump’s handicap and occasional low scores demonstrate genuine skill, regardless of the venue. They point to his longevity in the sport and his ability to compete against younger players as evidence of his athletic competence.

A Symbol of Vitality

At 80 years old, Trump’s continued participation in competitive golf serves as a powerful symbol of vitality for his base. By framing his victory as a result of "talent" rather than practice, he reinforces a narrative of natural superiority and effortless excellence. Whether viewed as a legitimate sporting achievement or a curated public relations moment, the win at Bedminster underscores the unique intersection of Trump’s personal brand, his business interests, and his political persona.

As he continues to navigate the demands of the presidency, the golf course remains a consistent backdrop for Trump’s public life, a place where he can claim victory, assert his dominance, and remind his supporters that, in his view, he still has the touch.
