Tragedy in Owasso: Influencer Sara Gilson Killed by Estranged Husband Weeks After Publicly Accusing Him of Pedophilia

The murder-suicide of Sara Gilson and Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey follows a turbulent period involving emergency protective orders, allegations of abuse against a minor, and viral social media posts.

In a shocking conclusion to a highly publicized domestic dispute, influencer Sara Gilson was fatally shot by her estranged husband, Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey, who then took his own life. The incident occurred on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at Gilson’s home in Owasso, Oklahoma, less than two weeks after she used TikTok to publicly accuse Duffey of being a pedophile.

According to the Owasso Police Department, authorities arrived at the scene around 11:15 p.m. after a child living in the home placed a 911 call. Upon arrival, officers discovered the bodies of Gilson, 43, and Duffey, 48, both suffering from gunshot wounds. A family member later confirmed their identities. Investigators determined that Duffey shot Gilson before turning the weapon on himself.

A Viral Warning Ignored
The tragedy unfolded against the backdrop of a bitter separation that had spilled onto social media. On July 11, just 12 days before her death, Gilson posted a video on TikTok that quickly gained attention. Participating in a popular trend where users simulate interviews for a hypothetical Netflix documentary, Gilson sat solemnly before the camera with a caption that read: “Preparing for when Netflix drops a documentary about my soon to be ex husband who I just found out is a pedophile.”

She added, “I wish I was joking. #plottwist #netflix #documentary.” The post served as a stark public declaration of the allegations that had recently led to legal action against Duffey.

History of Protective Orders and Disturbing Allegations
The relationship between Gilson and Duffey had been marked by legal interventions for years. Court records show that Gilson had filed two protective orders against Duffey in 2021, though both were dismissed because she did not appear at the hearings. However, the situation escalated dramatically in June 2026.

On June 10, Gilson filed for an emergency protective order, alleging that Duffey possessed a firearm, had threatened suicide, and had "gone on the run." A judge immediately ordered Duffey out of their shared home and mandated that he stay at least 100 yards away from Gilson. This order was extended on June 23 through August 24.

Simultaneously, another serious layer of alleged criminal behavior came to light. On the same day Gilson filed her emergency order, a separate protective order was filed on behalf of a 15-year-old girl whom Duffey had coached on a youth basketball team. The girl’s mother alleged that Duffey had engaged in inappropriate physical contact, including kissing and touching the minor. The mother claimed that another coach had witnessed some of this behavior.

Further allegations detailed a pattern of grooming and attempted silencing. The teenager reportedly told her mother that Duffey had sent her inappropriate messages, invited her to his hotel room during a tournament trip, and offered her money to "keep her quiet." This protective order was also extended through August 24, mirroring the timeline of Gilson’s own legal protections.

A Community in Shock
The convergence of domestic violence allegations and accusations of child abuse had created a tense atmosphere leading up to the final tragedy. Gilson’s decision to go public on TikTok highlighted the desperation and danger she felt, yet it ultimately preceded a violent end that has left the Owasso community reeling.

The case underscores the lethal risks often present in high-conflict separations, particularly when allegations of severe misconduct are involved. As investigations continue, the focus remains on the series of missed opportunities and escalating threats that culminated in the loss of two lives and the trauma of the child who witnessed the aftermath.
