Tom Brady, Gisele Bündchen, and the Lessons Carried From a Marriage

A Biographer’s Perspective: Changing Numbers as a Privacy Habit, The Conversation That Never Happened, Divorce, Gratitude, and New Beginnings What the Book Reveals

In the pages of Brady: An American Story and the Price of Greatness, author Lars Anderson traces the life of one of football’s greatest icons from his childhood through his record‑breaking NFL career and into the personal struggles that shaped his journey. One detail that stands out is a quiet, practical habit Tom Brady adopted during his marriage to Gisele Bündchen: regularly changing his mobile phone number, a privacy‑conscious practice he picked up from the supermodel herself. It is a small insight, but one that speaks to the dynamics of their life together and how certain patterns endure even after paths diverge.

The Conversation That Never Was

Anderson’s path to writing the book began with a moment he will never forget. It was April 5 2021, his 50th birthday, and he had just seen his mother pull up outside his home office the first time they had met in two years when his phone lit up with a call from Tom Brady. “I’m like, ‘You’ve got to be f‑‑‑ing kidding me,’” Anderson recalls. Faced with what he calls a “moral dilemma,” he told Brady he could not speak right then. Brady’s response was gracious: “Lars, go be with your family. We’ll get it done.” It was kind and generous, and it would be the last time they ever spoke. Brady and Anderson “never ended up hooking up,” and the biography was written without the quarterback’s direct participation.

A Habit Learned From Home

As Anderson researched and reported, he observed something revealing about how Brady navigates his personal boundaries: “I subsequently learned, as I was reporting this story, that Tom changes his cell number all the time it was a trick that he learned from Gisele.” Bündchen, known for guarding her privacy fiercely, established the practice, and Brady carried it forward. It is a simple but effective way to limit who can reach you and to keep unsolicited contact at a distance, a reminder that even in the most high‑profile partnerships, small, practical ways of protecting personal space can take root and persist.

Thirteen Years, Three Children, and a Chapter Closed

Brady and Bündchen were married for 13 years before finalising their divorce in October 2022. They share two children together Benjamin, now 16, and Vivian, 13 and Brady is also the father of Jack, 19, from an earlier relationship with actress Bridget Moynahan. The end of their marriage was widely covered, yet a source close to Bündchen recently shared that she holds no lingering bitterness about how things unfolded. “She always thought she would be married to Tom for the rest of her life,” the source said. “The divorce was very upsetting, and she struggled to understand it at the time, but she’s not bitter.”

Instead, she looks back with gratitude: “She’s grateful for their children and the years they shared.” Bündchen has moved forward into a new chapter, marrying Joaquim Valente and welcoming a son in February 2025. “She’s very spiritual and looking back, she feels the universe had another plan for her,” the source added, a perspective of acceptance and peace.

Greatness and Its Price

Anderson frames the book around the idea that excellence rarely comes without cost. For Brady, that cost included balancing relentless ambition with family life, navigating public attention, and sustaining relationships amid the spotlight. The details of his marriage and its conclusion are included not for sensationalism, Anderson has said, but because they are part of the full picture to “really understand” the man behind the jersey. Whether it is a phone number changed to preserve quiet, a conversation that never happened, or a life rebuilt with grace, these human moments reveal as much as any championship ring.
