We thank you

Life is fleeting. In the blink of an eye, unbelievable things can happen and our lives can change completely.

A few months ago, who would have thought that the world would be in this position. It is almost like our very own version a zombie-virus movie. We don't now who's next or what is going to happen tomorrow.

And yet, there are those who spend more than half of their lives putting theirs at risk in order to save us.

To the heroes who have saved and are continuously saving us during this trying time, we thank you.

To the people working at the Woolworths in my suburb and for all of those working in other markets, coffee shops, takeaway restaurants, the pharmacy workers, thank you for always preparing the sanitizers at the entrance of the stores, keeping the baskets and trolleys sanitized, for helping us look for the things we need and alternatives for items that we could not find, for putting up with us whenever we have our bad days and for risking your own health by going to work. Thank you for fearlessly facing hundreds of faces per day and being patient with us.

To the people working at the city rail, the men and women wiping all the handles at the train station, the benches and the seats inside the train, thank you for keeping us safe.

And most of all, to the doctors, nurses and other health workers, thank you for risking your lives to save ours. We are now facing a battle where humanity must come together in order to be saved and your are at the front of the line facing our enemy.

The video above was taken on October 2019. A few months before COVID-19 had suddenly and completely changed our lives. A very different world within the same lifetime.

This is what we had. And this is what we will have again, because of you. Children playing outside, people happily socializing with one another, going out for walks, listening to a musician play for all. All of these activities and more being done without the fear of standing too close to each other, without the fear of touching the wrong thing and getting infected.

Because of you, we are surviving and eventually, will be able to appreciate everything that we did not notice or had given any importance in the past. Because of you, we will be given the chance to appreciate life and just how important it is, as well as the people around us.

These months will be remembered, the fear that we felt, the relief that we will eventually feel and your roles in it will not be forgotten.

Many of us may not acknowledge it and we may not know how to express it in a way that it should be expressed but, we are aware that many of you have sacrificed so much to keep us safe and we will always be grateful.

Because of you, my father, a cancer patient, is continuously getting better. Despite this dangerous situation, we are able to be close to him and take care of him. While you, as a part of saving those who have been infected and keeping the rest of us from suffering the same fate, put yourselves in danger and distant yourselves from your own family.

We may never know the heaviness of the duties that you have chosen for yourselves, the sadness and the fear that you experience as you watch the numbers rise, the sleepless nights and the constant worry for your own family. We may never know the reality of your sacrifices, but we truly hope that you feel our love and appreciation.

Because of your efforts and sacrifices to this undeserving world, we will have a second chance to go back to our lives and do things better.

Thank you for saving us.
