Tips for hiring a great logo designer

Starting a business can be an incredibly fun and challenging adventure. I should know, I have done it five times. Some of them were successful and others not so much. One thing I know for sure is that with each venture, the most exciting part was launching my new product and creating a brand that visually represented my company. Seeing your new logo on your products and merchandise will be sure to give you an adrenaline rush. Even just reviewing logo concepts that were submitted by designers is incredibly exciting and when you finally settle on a design, your vision will become clear and your company will be a real thing.

Of course, there are good logos and bad logos. Throughout my career as an entrepreneur, I have had both. So today I wanted to share 3 tips that will help you get the logo design that will do your business justice. It takes a bit of effort and research, but if you follow the tips below, I have no doubt that your logo will be world class.

Tip #1: You get what you pay.

This is true when it comes to almost anything in life but when it comes to hiring designers it is an especially important rule to follow. With access to thousands of designers from around the world, you can hire a logo designer for as little as 5 dollars or pay as much as 10 thousand. For most of us, the budget will be somewhere between these two. My recommendation is to not cheap-out. If the offer sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. A quality designer will not be able to go through the process of designing a custom logo for less than $150.

Tip #2: Take your time looking through portfolios.

I know you're excited but taking your time at this stage is important. Looking through a designer's work will give you a good idea of what their styles are and how consistently they produce quality logos. I also recommend doing a reverse image search on some of their work to make sure that these portfolio pieces were in fact designed by him/her. The last thing you want is to spend money and time on establishing your brand only to find you are working with a stolen logo. You can also ask for recommendations so you can speak with the designer's previous clients directly.

Tip #3: Provide lots of samples.

Design is subjective, what looks good to you might not look good to someone else. I found out the hard way that designers are NOT mind-readers and ended up with designs that did not suit my brand. The best way to avoid this is to provide as many templates as possible. You can find other designers work on sites like Behance or create your own logo templates at a site like Logo Creator to get a more exact representation of what you're looking for. This will make the designer's job much easier and will ensure that you end up with a style that suits you.

Getting started

Now that you know the 3 golden rules for hiring a logo designer you can start the process with confidence. Just remember to take your time and make sure you have the budget to hire a talented professional. Nothing screams "unprofessional business" like a cheap logo. Plus, hiring a cheap designer will only cost you more in the long run. Using a $5 logo will almost certainly guarantee a redesign in the near future. If you do a good job vetting the candidates and providing lots of logo samples relevant to the style you are looking for, getting a great logo is almost guaranteed.
