They Didn’t Lose the Crown. They Chose the Open Door.

A quiet timeline of Harry, Meghan, and the price of leaving a palace.

2016, London. A mutual friend introduced them. She arrived first and crouched to pet the dog. He came later with cold coffee. They talked for three hours. He asked for her number himself. He would have had an assistant do it before. This time he didn’t.

She was not aristocracy. He was a prince. She had acted, divorced, paid her own bills. He grew up in front of cameras. His mother was chased to death by them. He hated cameras. He also needed them. He needed someone who didn’t see a prince. She needed someone who didn’t see an actress.

2017, Kensington Palace kitchen. He cooked pasta. Too little water. It stuck to the pot. She laughed, took a fork, scraped the bottom. No photos. He watched her scrape. He turned the heat down. He wouldn’t have entered the kitchen before. A servant would have done it. This time he didn’t.

She mentioned Diana in front of him. He didn’t look away. He took out an old watch. Diana’s. The strap was cracked. He handed it to her. She put it on. It was too big. She didn’t take it off.

November 2017, engagement interview. A reporter asked, “How is she?” He held her hand. He said, “She’s with me.” He didn’t say love. His body turned toward her. She looked at his profile. She didn’t cry. She smiled.

May 2018, before the wedding. Garden. He lowered his head. A servant called him to take a call. He stopped. She adjusted his tie. It was crooked. She didn’t kiss him. He didn’t kiss her either. The phone rang three times. He went. She stayed. The wind lifted her skirt. She held it down.

Wedding. Windsor. Broadcast worldwide. Carriage. Bells. Crowd. They sat in the car. She held his hand. He looked out the window. He looked at the cameras. He turned back. He looked at her fingers. Her nails were unpainted. He squeezed once.

After the wedding, the door closed. Frogmore Cottage. Boxes piled in the hallway. A pothos on the windowsill. She had brought it. He hadn’t kept plants before. He watered it. Too much. The leaves turned yellow. She said nothing. She cut the yellow leaves off. He stood beside her, holding the scissors. He handed them to her. She took them.

Late 2018, the media began. Tabloid covers. Her father. Her old photos. Her friends. Her race. Her dresses. Her fingers. She couldn’t touch her belly. Touch it and she was performing. Don’t touch it and she was cold. She walked fast. She walked slow. She breathed. Her breathing was wrong too.

The palace said nothing. No explanation. No complaint. An aide said, “Keep your dignity.” She said, “I need help.” The aide said, “Think of the bigger picture.” She went to a doctor. The doctor gave her pills. She took them. She couldn’t sleep. She stayed awake. She stared at the ceiling. Harry lay beside her. He stared at the ceiling. He put his hand on hers. She pulled away. She got out of bed. She went to the kitchen. She drank water. He followed. He stood in the doorway. She didn’t turn around.

2019, Africa. An interview. A reporter asked, “Are you okay?” She said, “I’m not.” She cried. He stood beside her. His hands were in his pockets. He looked at the ground. He looked at the camera. He looked at her. He walked over. He sat beside her. He held her hand. He said, “History is repeating.” He meant Diana. He didn’t say “I love you.” He said, “History is repeating.” She nodded. She wiped her tears. She smiled at the camera. Her teeth were very white. Her eyes were very red.

Inside the palace, someone discussed the baby’s skin color. Someone discussed the baby’s hair. Someone discussed the baby’s name. She heard. She didn’t cry. She closed the door. She sat on the floor. She called a friend. The friend said, “Are you okay?” She said, “I want to leave.” The friend said, “Where to?” She said, “I don’t know.” She hung up. She stood. She went to the nursery. Archie was asleep. She touched his hair. She didn’t turn on the light.

Harry came back. He saw her on the floor. He saw the crib. He saw the rain outside. He said, “We’re leaving.” She said, “We’re leaving.” They didn’t argue. They didn’t cry. They started packing. He took boxes. She took tape. He sealed boxes. She wrote labels. The labels said “Kitchen,” “Books,” “Clothes,” “Archie.” None said “Royal Family.”

January 2020. Statement. Exit. Sandringham. Negotiation. The Queen. Charles. William. Harry. Meghan in Canada. Phone. Video. Agreement. No longer use “HRH.” No longer represent the Crown. Repay renovation costs. Pay for security themselves. Harry signed. He put down the pen. He looked out the window. Trees. Birds in the trees. The birds flew away. He stood. He walked out of the room.

Frogmore. Empty. The pothos still there. Leaves yellower. He watered it. Too little. He didn’t cut them. He sat in the kitchen. Stomach medicine on the counter. He looked at the medicine. He looked at his phone. It didn’t ring. He looked at the pothos. The pothos said nothing. He stood. He took a box. He packed the pothos. He drove. He went to the airport.

California. Montecito. Big house. Porch. Yard. Dog. Children. She was barefoot. She grew vegetables. He walked the dog. He picked up dog shit. He never used to pick it up. He took a bag. He picked it up. She saw. She didn’t smile. She handed him gloves. He put them on.

Netflix. Spotify. Interviews. Book. They talked. They made money. They got criticized. They got praised. They turned off comments. They didn’t look. They looked at the children. The children ran. The children laughed. The children cried. They soothed them. They said no nanny. Then they hired one. Either way, they did the soothing themselves.

2021, Oprah interview. She sat in a chair. He sat beside her. She said, “I didn’t want to be alive anymore.” He held her hand. He said nothing. She talked. He talked. They talked about the palace. They talked about the media. They talked about skin color. They talked about silence. They finished. They went home. They turned off the lights. They slept. They didn’t dream.

2022, the Queen died. They returned to England. They attended the funeral. They walked in the procession. They didn’t hold hands. They looked at the coffin. They looked at the crowd. They looked at the cameras. They got in the car. They returned to California.

2023, book. Documentary. They continued. They got criticized. They continued. They looked at the children. The children went to school. The children called for Dad. Then Mom. They answered. They cooked. They washed dishes. They argued. They made up. They argued. They made up. They didn’t mention the palace.

2024, Windsor. Frogmore. The pothos was moved away. The windowsill was empty. The keys were handed over. The locks were changed. They didn’t go back. They were in California. Porch. Dog. Children. She was barefoot. He held the leash. She looked at him. He looked at her. They said nothing. They walked forward.

2016, London. That bar. Small table. She arrived first. She crouched to pet the dog. He arrived later. Coffee cold. He sat down. He looked at her. She looked at him. He talked. She talked. Three hours. He stood. He paid. She didn’t fight him for it. He opened the door. She went out. He followed. It was raining. He held the umbrella. She didn’t dodge. They walked. The umbrella tilted. He got wet. She looked at him. She smiled. He smiled.

Now. California. Porch. No rain. Sun. She was barefoot. He held the leash. The children ran past. The dog barked. She called him. He turned back. She pointed at the children. He looked at the children. He looked at the dog. He looked at her. She said nothing. He said nothing either. They walked forward. The door is open.
