The Red Barn Loft Art

Nature rendered in ink and watercolor

Like many children, Kim Lansdell loved to draw and paint. Unlike many children, she showed enough talent to earn a fine arts diploma in 1999. Having met the man of her dreams, she married, started a family, and art fell by the wayside. It was only a few years ago, her children now older, that she decided to make art a priority in her life again.

Bringing art back into her life lit a fire inside Kim and she quickly moved beyond traditional pencil. Watercolor and ink were the medium she discovered worked best for her renderings and she embraced the mixed mediums whole-heartedly.

Kim channeled her love of animals into ink and watercolor paintings, drawing her inspiration from the beautiful farm she lives on with her family in Alberta, Canada. She captured people’s hearts with the whimsical facial expressions she captured from the creatures she found in her own barn and it wasn’t long before she was being asked to do commissions.

Her first collection of animal themed portraits immediately caught the public’s eye and Kim Lansdell became a name to watch in the art world. She began to create prints of her adorable animals that included a duck, two goats, and a llama, among others.

At first, she shared these on her personal Facebook, but as her art became more popular, she created a dedicated page for her paintings. In 2018, Kim set up an Etsy shop to sell prints of her animal collections.

From there, she’s gone on to create more beautiful collections based around nature and assorted animal themes, as well as doing commissions. Animal lovers give her images of their favorite companion to have her create a unique image of the animal.

The portraits that Kim works on are often of deceased pets that were much loved. Her ability to capture their personality in a few strokes of ink is uncanny and much appreciated by the grieving owners. Of course, she also does portraits of pets that are very much alive, as well.

“I’m blessed to be able to have turned a hobby and passion into a job to help support my family and bring the joy of art into people’s homes,” Kim says with a smile. It’s obvious in every brushstroke that she is truly passionate about her art.

Her ability to capture the personality of an animal, no matter how big or small (her paintings cover everything from an adorable field mouse to a cow), makes Kim’s talent something special. It’s not surprising that people want a piece of it. For those of us who knew her when her pencil drawings were incredible renditions of the creatures she loved, it’s no surprise that this talented woman has come so far.

With art taking a special focus in her life, Kim is proud to earn money with something she loves so immensely. Whether she’s working on a commission or painting a barnyard friend, you’ll find her with a sparkle in her eye and a paintbrush in her hand.

While her first sales were small and she posted mostly online, Kim has now expanded to doing art shows and art walks. This allows her to reach more people than ever, though of course, due to the pandemic, she’s back to selling online only.

If you’d like to support Kim and The Red Barn Loft, please like her Facebook page, where she posts her beautiful art, or jump over to Etsy to purchase a print from one of her animal collections.
