The Mercy I Keep

Justice or Revenge

By AmberPublished 3 months ago 3 min read

I have carried the weight of a thousand silent storms...

I've held the ashes of what you took from me in the hollow of my hands.

Do not mistake my quietness for weakness.

Do not confuse my restraint with surrender.

I know the names... I remember the doors that were closed, the wounds that were hidden, and the words that cut deeper than any blade.

I have stood at the edge of my own darkness and felt it whisper...

"Make them hurt the way you hurt."

I would be lying if I said I never imagined it.

I am human... I have anger, I have grief, and a heart that still aches for the person I was before I learned what betrayal felt like.

There is a power in me that frightens even my enemies. Not because I can destroy. But because I can.

I have the pieces; I have the knowledge. I can pull the threads and watch the walls they built collapse.

I could become the storm that answers every storm.

I could turn every scar into a weapon and every memory into a match.

But I will not.

I refuse to let the cruelty you gave me become the language I speak.

There is still something sacred inside me you could not reach.

A part of me that survived. A part of me that stayed gentle even after being given every reason not to.

I will lay down my weapons... Not because my hands are too weak to hold them, but because they are strong enough to choose peace.

Perhaps that is the justice you never expected.

That I will rise. That I will heal. That I will become everything you tried to convince me I could never be.

You may never know how close you came to creating your own destruction.

But I will know.

I will know that the greatest victory was not watching you fall...

It was proving you never had the power to make me become you.

That was one thing you could never take away from me... My choice.

You could take pieces of my peace. You could leave scars where there were once only open wounds. You could test the limits of my patience and push me into the darkest corners of my own heart. But you could never own what came next.

You could not decide whether my pain would turn into poison or whether it would become something that made me stronger.

Maybe you expected me to break. Maybe you expected me to be consumed by anger, to spend my days plotting a way to make you feel what I felt. Maybe you thought the only way I could reclaim what was taken from me was by taking something from you in return.

However, I discovered something greater than revenge.

I discovered that my ability to destroy was never my greatest strength. My greatest strength was having every reason to, and still choosing not to.

Anyone can surrender to rage. Anyone can return cruelty with cruelty. Anyone can allow their wounds to become an excuse to wound others.

But it takes a different kind of courage to stand in the presence of your own anger and say, "You do not control me."

So I will leave you with the consequences of your own choices. I will not carry them for you. I will not let the damage you caused become the foundation of who I am.

I will heal. I will rebuild. I will fulfill my potential.

Know, you don't deserve my mercy...

But I... I deserve my freedom.
