The High Cost of 'Free' Surgery: Layla Taylor's Cautionary Tale of Botched Plastic Surgery
The 'Secret Lives of Mormon Wives' star learned the hard way that when a procedure seems too good to be true, it usually is and fixing the damage can cost far more than the original price tag.

Layla Taylor knows all too well that sometimes a cheap price tag is a bad idea. The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star, 25, opened up about her regrettable plastic surgery on a new episode of Hulu's Get Real, where host Amanda Hirsch commented on the likelihood of Taylor getting offered complimentary cosmetic services because of her fame.
Taylor agreed that she does get an influx of offers, but taking them up has led to botched results in the past. "I learned my lesson the hard way," she said before revealing that her prior boob job and tummy tuck needed to be "repaired" after getting them done free of charge.
The Price of a "Free" Lunch
"I was a single mom, wanting to date and wanting to feel good in my body and look good for myself too. I couldn't afford surgery at that point," recalled Taylor, who shares two children with ex-husband Clayton Wessel. "I wish I would've just waited until I could've afforded to pay for it myself."
Her words carry the weight of hard-won experience. Taylor's decision to accept free procedures offered to her because of her growing fame seemed like a blessing at the time. But the complications that followed turned what should have been a confidence-boosting transformation into a years-long ordeal of revisions, repairs, and regret.
The reality is that "free" plastic surgery is rarely free. When doctors offer complimentary procedures, it's often for promotional purposes; they want to showcase their work on a public figure. But the quality of that work may not match the standards of procedures that patients pay for. Taylor's experience serves as a cautionary tale for anyone tempted by the allure of free or heavily discounted cosmetic surgery.
A Long Road to Repair
In March 2026, Taylor shared she had undergone breast revision surgery performed by Dr. Daniel Barrett. "I've been thinking about getting my boobs redone honestly since I got them," she said in an Instagram clip shared by the surgeon. "I just wanted a fresher look more fitted to my body, and I know that Dr. Barrett would do just that."
"I feel like my boobs have made me unconfident the last year having them because I just feel like they're a lot," she also said at the time. "So, I'm excited to have more confidence and just feel better in my body."
Her revision surgery wasn't limited to just her breasts. During Get Real, Taylor also commented on her recent revision surgery for a hernia that developed because of her prior abdominoplasty, which she got in 2024. "It caused there to be a hole between my abs where my belly button was, so my hernia came out," she explained. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, a hernia is when an "intestine, organ or other tissue protrudes" at or near the surgical site.
The complication was a direct result of the initial tummy tuck procedure, which she detailed in a July 23 Instagram video. What was supposed to be a straightforward body-contouring procedure had instead created a painful and potentially dangerous health issue.
The Pressure of Utah's Beauty Standards
Speaking to the beauty standards in her community, Taylor said that "everyone is so obsessed with vanity and it's so hard." She added, "I get it, you want to present yourself the right way to the world and want to feel pretty, but I think Utah does take it a step too far."
Her comments highlight a broader cultural phenomenon. Utah has become known for its high rates of cosmetic procedures, driven by a combination of factors including the state's large Latter-day Saint population, which often emphasizes traditional gender roles and physical appearance, as well as the influence of social media and the rise of influencer culture. The pressure to look a certain way can be overwhelming, leading many women to undergo multiple procedures in pursuit of an idealized image.
In a September 2024 Virtual Reali-Tea podcast, Taylor admitted to undergoing six enhancements including the tuck and boob job in four months. Her other "small little tweaks," as she described, included lip filler, chin filler and Botox. The sheer number of procedures in such a short timeframe illustrates the intensity of the pressure she felt to conform to beauty standards.
Reclaiming Confidence
Despite the setbacks, Taylor's recent revision surgeries represent an effort to reclaim her body and her confidence. She has been open about her journey on social media, sharing her experiences with her followers and offering a candid look at the realities of cosmetic surgery both the good and the bad.
Her transparency has resonated with fans, many of whom have faced similar struggles with body image and the pressure to undergo procedures. By sharing her story, Taylor is helping to demystify the world of plastic surgery and encouraging others to think carefully before making decisions that could have long-lasting consequences.
A Lesson Learned
Taylor's story is a powerful reminder that cosmetic surgery is not something to be taken lightly. The allure of "free" or discounted procedures can be tempting, but as Taylor discovered, the cost of repairing botched work can far exceed the amount saved. More importantly, the emotional toll of living with results that fall short of expectations can be significant.
As she continues on her journey toward healing and self-acceptance, Taylor's advice to others is clear: wait until you can afford to pay for a procedure yourself, do your research, and choose a qualified surgeon whose work you trust. Your body is worth the investment.
The circus of beauty standards is always evolving. But Layla Taylor's story is a reminder that sometimes, the most important thing we can do is stop chasing perfection and start embracing ourselves as we are.
