The Escape

Threading Words

Being active is a requirement in life. Whether it was sports, cooking lessons, or playing an instrument, every moment, there was something. And once Father Time became more apparent during adolescence, the world kept us busy with drama, war, sex, and obscure views of the truth. A lesser mind would crumble, but for those that pay attention, we escape.

Escapes are like hidden doors awaiting a visitor. Most, if lucky, stumble upon them. Like second nature habits, we prosper off the new skill and perfect it unconsciously. Allowing it to flow as breathe. Like a home lit by sunlight with mellow sounds of rhythmic beats playing in the background. Or how coffee brewing fills a home with aromas that can transport anyone back to the tropics where life was more than overwhelmed by consumerism and notifications. The indentation in corner seats of the couch with nothing but a throw blanket and a few sheets of paper, with some of the world's most brilliant minds seated on a side table. A quick prayer of thanks and gratitude begins the journey of leaving this time for another.

Adrenaline begins to rush as your time-traveling mind catapults you into a new tale that you dare not live out loud; stories only told or seen in dreams. How elaborate the imagination can be, like a movie of a whole life, no wonder people find hobbies useful, stress-relieving, and sometimes addictive, sometimes better than a drug. They can go up as far as the high heavens or be as small as imagining the conversations you wish you dared to command, the speeches you could deliver with endless precision.

That's the commonality with creative souls; they learn to jump the gate and never look back. While the rest of the world sleeps in space, they thrive in the constant awe of the beauty they help create. Their curiosity inspires, rebuilds joy, and frames the world, so differently, it's hard to look away. Creative thoughts continue to enthuse materials, people, worlds.

Then suddenly, the worlds start to collide. There is a small glimpse of focus where there is a choice to be made. Do the worlds collide and merge slowly? Or is the choice to leave the free-spirited you behind? Almost instantly, you can feel the tug of war, "Get your head out of the clouds…take a cold shower…focus on what's real," they say. Why have we conformed most of our lives to be filled with time and creative leches?

For the longest time, my soul treasured reading. And in all honesty, it still does. It longs for knowledge and the constant escape from the dreadful 9 – 5. Turning on some music while reading a book aloud opens me to that world, again and again, a world vastly different than my own. It's typically a time of no pain or suffering and is usually when my soul leads. And if left unattended, a simple quest could feel like an eternity.

In these moments, I get to choose to live as boldly as the characters do that I have written on those pages. Some are strong in brute strength, others of the mind, most in both by the end of their story. They all have some unique, innate ability that they have unlocked from years of harnessing it or finally stumbling upon their inner power. Reading is a time where you can be unapologetically you.

The exact strength you used to dream should inspire you to live. So, to make a long story short, the threading of words is how I escape and cope with this world because this world is only one side of my story.
