The Comeback, the Blazer, and the 24-Inch Waves: Jessica Biel Commands the Matchbox Premiere
Nine years after her last film, the 44-year-old actress returned to the red carpet in a plunging Dolce & Gabbana suit and mermaid hair that took four days to colour a premiere look engineered as carefully as the comeback it announced

New York, 8 October 2026, Red carpet fashion is often described in the language of risk, but the most memorable looks are rarely gambles at all. They are calculations, proportions weighed against proportions, softness against structure, drama against believability. On Monday, Oct. 5, at the New York City premiere of Matchbox the Movie, Jessica Biel presented the product of one such calculation: an all-black Dolce & Gabbana ensemble featuring a sharply tailored blazer with a plunging neckline, paired with a floor-length sheer skirt, finished with dazzling drop earrings and a cascade of mermaid-inspired waves that fell well past her shoulders.
The effect was immediate. The 44-year-old actress did not simply attend the premiere of the Apple Original Film at the AMC Lincoln Square Theater; she arrived, commandingly, at a moment that carried its own quiet significance. Matchbox the Movie marks Biel's first feature film since 2017's Shock and Awe, a nine-year screen absence during which she built a formidable television résumé, BoJack Horseman, Limetown, Candy, The Better Sister, while the film world waited. Monday night's look was, in every sense, a reintroduction.
The engineering of a wave
Behind the glamour was a week of unglamorous labour. Biel's longtime hairstylist Adir Abergel revealed to PEOPLE that the mermaid waves were built on clip-in extensions ranging from a whopping 22 to 24 inches in length and that the colour alone consumed nearly four days of work. "The color was a real labor of love," Abergel said, crediting his assistant Selina Boon, who collaborates with him on all his colour. "We wanted that soft, faded effect where the extensions melt seamlessly into her own hair."
The strategy behind the length was architectural. "The goal was a dramatic change that still felt completely believable, like she'd been growing it out all summer," Abergel explained. "The neckline was a big part of it. With that long V and the open chest, the length balanced the look. A structured jacket can sometimes feel quite strict, but having all that hair and natural movement made her feel softer and sexier. It brought a softness to the whole vibe while still feeling effortless, like her hair had always been this long."
The waves themselves were an act of deliberate old-school: Abergel set Biel's hair on "flex rods," the velvet-covered curlers of another era, to achieve what he calls a "soft, romantic wave that never looks too done." Beneath the setting, he layered three Virtue products: Damage Reverse Serum, Healing Oil, and Un-Frizz Cream for shine and smoothness without weight. Four days of colour, an arsenal of product, and a styling technique older than the premiere's youngest attendees, all in service of looking like none of it had happened.
The film behind the fashion
The project warranting all this choreography is, on paper, an unlikely prestige vehicle: an action-adventure inspired by the widely popular Matchbox toy brand, starring John Cena alongside Arturo Castro, Sam Richardson, Danai Gurira and Teyonah Parris. The official synopsis promises "an action-packed, globetrotting adventure" about a group of childhood friends whose lives are upended when an undercover CIA agent Sean, their long-absent former leader, played by Cena returns to their small town and unwittingly drags them into "a frantic international pursuit to save the world." Apple TV, Skydance Media and Mattel Studios released the film's trailer in July following a Comic-Con push; the film premieres October 9 on Apple TV.
For Biel, the toy-brand blockbuster represents a particular kind of return not the austere indie that typically announces an actress's comeback, but a broad, four-quadrant adventure that reintroduces her to the widest possible audience. Cena, for his part, arrives fresh from the Netflix comedy Little Brother opposite Eric Andre.
A celebration on both coasts of the heart
The premiere also landed within days of a personal milestone. On Sunday, Oct. 4, Biel and her husband, Justin Timberlake who share sons Silas and Phineas, celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary with rare, candid photographs on Instagram. Timberlake, 45, posted a shot of the couple holding hands from behind on an outdoor stroll, soundtracked by James Taylor's "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)," captioned simply: "HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ❤️ @JESSICABIEL." Biel answered with a selfie of the pair, flashing a peace sign at the camera: "Happy anniversary, my love @justintimberlake ♥️." The couple wed on Oct. 19, 2012, in a ceremony in southern Italy.
Fourteen years of marriage, nine years away from the big screen, four days of hair colour and twenty-four inches of extensions, and on a Monday night in New York, all of it converged into a single image of a woman reasserting her place on a red carpet entirely on her own terms. The waves will eventually come out. The comeback, one suspects, is just beginning.
