I should preface this review by saying I am not the biggest fan of comic book hero movies. I've kept up with the major franchises, The Avengers and X-Men and Suicide Squad and even the new Spider Man. So when I heard there was a new Batman movie in production, I was naturally excited. As a lifelong Batman fan I will admit when I saw the first images and clips of this movie I wasn't too excited about it. I wasn't a fan of the red color scheme or casting Robert Pattinson as my favorite DC super hero. But as soon as the title screen rolled in, I was reminded why I love movies so much. This movie is the perfect super hero movie for the post pandemic world we live in today.

All stars align in this movie in the sense that production, camera work and sound all blend perfectly to create the most immersive super hero movie of all time. This movie's setting, Gotham City is the star of the movie not named Robert Pattinson. When compared to Marvel movies that all live within their same universe produced by Disney, this very fittingly will remind everyone of us of something we can imagine our society turning into not too long from now. This movie is the modern equivalent of the first 1980's Michael Keaton "Batman" movie. Even when compared to something like "The Dark Knight". This movie does everything to differentiate itself from the glossy clean look of The Dark Knight. Instead of long crane shots and Hans Zimmer composed pieces that rival those of a 007 soundtrack we get Tarantino style angles that get straight to the point and Nirvana's Something in the way as the theme song. This Batman movie makes it a priority to use fear as Batman's strongest ally next to cat woman. The vibe of this movie is gritty dark and violent. This is the perfect hero for a post pandemic society, This Batman feels realistic and like a vigilante turned hero as he should. The dark vibe of the movie does not feel super CGI and does a perfect job of blending into the shots to create the most immersive super hero movie to date.

The Penguin, Batman, Catwoman and The Riddler

So it passes the eye test. It looks good, sounds good but how is the story? This is by far one of the longest Batman movies ever clocking in at 3 hours. But every minute of it is worth it. touching on the topic of fear from earlier, this movie's theme is fear. A feeling we can all relate to, human or animal, fear is relatable to every living thing. This makes the movie seem that much more realistic and relatable but most importantly it sets itself apart from other super hero movies. Everyone has something to hide in this world and this movie aims at exposing that. At no point did I feel I could of taken a bathroom break and not missed a key point in the movie. Just how a great artist uses every single inch of their canvas, this movie uses every single minute of its running time to push forward its plots and story. This movie does an excellent job of methodically planting multiple conflicts that are connected between all the characters. This keeps viewers hooked wanting to see how they resolve and affect one another.

Being the first movie in this series, the movie introduces us to a vast array of fan favorite Batman characters. Batman takes on The Penguin and The Riddler and is aided by Catwoman, Commissioner Gordon, and Alfred. But the most impressive character and the one we can't wait to see more of is, The Batmobile. The Batmobile scenes are by far the highlight of the movie and will leave fans wanting more in the next films. This Batmobile is a more Mad Max style combat vehicle than iterations before it and again perfect for the world it roams in. Combining the characters plot development with with the immersive world and amazing production makes for the greatest Batman movie of all time.
