When do a person's recurring themes start to seem like their shtick? When does repetition turn into an obsession? I wonder because "Master Gardener" (1/2, currently playing in theaters) occasionally plays like a spoof of a Paul Schrader movie. It occasionally brims with the unholy virtues and ethical contradictions of this director's finest work. One way or the other, it's a movie to be reckoned with.

Not only does it directly tie into the monumental narrative shift of "Fast Five," but it continuously references other films in the series, either through explicit mentions or action sequences designed to evoke similar moments from "Fast & Furious 6," "Furious 7," and "The Fate of the Furious." Penned by Dan Mazeau and directed by Justin Lin (who departed the project due to creative differences, leaving his absence felt particularly in the choreography of action), the script feels like a self-referential loop, often veering into parody rather than providing a fresh entry that can stand on its own merits. Although the film offers entertainingly absurd action set pieces, greatly enhanced by Jason Momoa's enjoyable performance, there's an unmistakable sense of familiarity throughout "Fast X," rendering it more akin to reheated leftovers than a revitalized experience. The highly anticipated action movie sequel, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, has now started test screening, with Paramount higher up revealing that audiences have been heaping praise on Tom Cruise and the action sequences, but felt that the movie is too long. During a recent panel at the 2023 Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, & Telecom Conference, the President of Paramount Global, Bob Bakish, revealed what the feedback has been so far for the seventh outing in the long-running Mission: Impossible franchise. “I haven’t seen all of ‘MI:7,’ but I’ve seen a bunch of it. We actually just did the first test screening for an audience last week, and the audience lost their mind. And it’s still too long, they’ve got to cut it. But the movie is insane. It’s like a complete thrill ride. And Tom, he’s very good.” So, while it sounds like Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has a lot going for it, including Cruise’s performance and his dedication to the death-defying stunts, the sequel “still” has the problem of being far too long. According to test screen audiences, anyway. No doubt there will be those who could watch Cruise leap out of planes and jump off trains until the end of time.
