No one could have ever in their wildest dreams predicted how the year 2020 would be unlike any other year we'd ever witnessed in world history. When the novel Coronavirus COVID-19 first emerged in China at the beginning of the year, many people wrote it off as an ordinary flu virus that was too far away from them geographically to have any impact on their lives.

A few months later, the global economy had virtually shut down and we were all locked in our homes.

While the worst aspect of COVID-19 is inarguably the loss of lives, the devastating effect it's had on people's lives from a financial standpoint cannot be ignored. Many people are facing eviction and many entrepreneurs have found themselves in an extremely precarious, if not outright dire, situation.

If you're a business owner who's struggled during COVID-19, it might seem like the situation is hopeless. While it might be impossible for you to reach your pre-lockdown sales numbers, there are indeed some things you can do to try and better your situation. Here are some strategies that will help increase business sales during COVID-19.

Do Whatever Possible To Speed Up Your Shipping

COVID-19 meant that fewer employees were present at many shipping centers and distribution hubs. This resulted in shipping delays. Furthermore, financial issues in the postal service exacerbated an already-strained system.

For businesses attempting to stay afloat via online commerce, the effects of this were devastating. Customers would leave negative reviews or demand refunds due to the shipping delay, despite the fact that the situation was completely out of the business owner's hands.

While you can't snap your fingers and make the post office work faster, you can use technology to determine if you're currently utilizing the best shipping company for your needs. Investing in delivery routing software will allow you to figure out the best method to get your products to your consumers as quickly as possible.

Understand Your Audience

COVID-19 was both the worst and best thing to ever happen to the online retail landscape. It had the negative effect of reducing the amount of people purchasing goods due to the struggling economy and people's overall lack of financial stability.

However, not every person was rendered unemployed due to COVID-19. Many people were able to continue their work from home, which meant they were making the same amount of money as before the pandemic. Without physical retailers, many of these financially stable people turned to online shopping.

It's essential that you understand your audience. You need to appeal to the people who are still financially capable of buying online. If you're in the business-to-business world, try to find a way to target freelancers and those who work from a home office. If you sell luxury goods, market yourself to financially stable people who miss being able to treat themselves at the mall. This requires creative marketing that is targeted specifically towards the people still capable of spending money on non-essential items and services.

Utilize Sales and Discounts

The sad reality of the business world is that you sometimes have no choice but to discount your items or take a profit loss when the economy is in jeopardy. While you don't need to give away your items for free, now is the time to use sales, discounts and coupon codes to their maximum benefit. People are more likely to click on the ads they see on social media if there is a coupon or promotion mentioned predominantly. While these might yield lower total profits, it will allow you to keep your head above water.

One day the world will go back to normal, no matter how dire things might seem. For now, business owners and entrepreneurs need to accept the situation at hand and utilize creativity to stay afloat. None of us could have seen COVID-19 coming, but that doesn't mean that we can't push through this unprecedented situation and emerge successful on the other side.
