Racism on Society

Racial discrimination is any discrimination against any individual on the basis of their skin color, or racial or ethnic origin. Individuals can discriminate by refusing to do business with, socialize with, or share resources with people of a certain group. Racism is growing in the United States, warns a United Nations expert after the Charlottesville incidents

Racism and xenophobia are on the rise in the United States, a United Nations think tank has warned, following demonstrations and violent incidents by the far right in Charlottesville, Virginia. "We are outraged by the violence and racial hatred displayed in Charlottesville by right-wing extremists, white supremacists and neo-Nazi groups," the experts said in a joint statement.

“We believe that these events are the latest examples of the rise of racism, racial discrimination, Africanophobia, racist violence and xenophobia that have been expressed in demonstrations throughout the United States.

“We are deeply concerned about the multiplication and increasing visibility of groups that preach hate and racism. Acts and speech of hate and racism must be unequivocally condemned. Hate crimes must be investigated and those responsible must be held accountable in court.” Human rights experts renewed their urgent appeal to the US authorities to redouble their efforts to address this problem.

"We urge the federal government and state authorities to adopt effective political measures as a priority, in order to stop demonstrations or incitements to racial violence and to understand how these events affect social cohesion," the experts said. “The government must remain vigilant in combating all acts of racism, xenophobia and racist violence, wherever they occur. Recent incidents in California, Oregon, New Orleans, and Kentucky, as well as in Charlottesville, highlight the geographic breadth of the problem.”

Charlottesville

The experts noted that far-right protesters in Charlottesville had chanted anti-blacks, anti-Jewish and anti-immigrant slogans, and further stated that it was of the utmost importance that those who had committed crimes of racism or violence be held accountable for their crimes. acts.

Experts condemned the "horrendous" event of the car that ran over a group of protesters and left one dead and many injured. They also expressed their sadness at the death of two Virginia State Police officers who died when the helicopter from which they were monitoring the development of the situation in Charlottesville crashed.

Jan-Willem Breure

Tackling the roots Racism?

Many people believe that to reduce racism successfully we have to tack the roots of racisms. One such person is Jan-Willem Breure, the founder of the Septimius Awards. Aside from his award ceremony, which is geared towards diversity. Jan-Willem Breure is also developing a documentary to reduce racism. The film is called United Races and hopes to address racism. But instead of focusing on the negatives, he wants to portray the most important historical contributions of all the races. He believes that by highlighting these positive contribution society can expand their appreciation for other races. Jan-Willem experienced racism first hand when he moved from Namibia (Southern Africa) to the Netherlands (Western Europe). He saw how Africans were portrayed in Dutch education and believes that those stereo typical portrays of poverty contributed greatly to the negative images that white Dutch had of Africans. Many of his classmates did not believe that Jan-Willem Breure had satellite television in Namibia, but instead believed that he grew up in a hut, because those were the images shown of Africa in Dutch middle schools.

Do his ideas have some merit or are they an idealistic pursuit that will not bear fruit? Racism is a tough nut to crack. But the bottom line is that today racism not decreasing, but instead increasing. The Charlottesville incident was a wake-up call to the world. But I fear with inflation and COVID things look grim in the near future. But no matter how dire the circumstances we cannot give up hope.
