Influencer Sofia Murillo's father is speaking out after she died in a helicopter crash. On Aug. 8, Murillo, a 17-year-old Colombian content creator who had a combined following of over 250,000 across Instagram and TikTok, was riding in a four-seat helicopter on a 20-minute tour with her mother and grandmother when the aircraft crashed near Vista Chinesa, a forested scenic overlook in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, per local outlets CNN Brasil and g1. The three family members and the helicopter's pilot died in the incident.

Murillo's uncle, aunt and cousin who were in Brazil with the three deceased family members on a trip told local outlets Murillo had boarded the helicopter around 11 a.m. for what was supposed to be a 20-minute scenic helicopter ride to see the iconic Christ the Redeemer from the sky, per g1. The three family members waited in the hangar, intending to take a second flight, when they learned of the crash from local news reports, they reportedly claimed. The family was also celebrating the 15th birthday of Murillo's cousin, making the trip meant to be a joyous occasion.

Speaking to local press, Murillo's father, Diego Murillo, said he learned of the tragedy when he received a call from his brother, reported g1. The news came as a devastating shock, as Diego had been looking forward to hearing about his daughter's first international trip and the exciting experiences she was having.

A Father's Heartbreak

"Sofia was a girl who was very concerned about the people around her," Diego remembered of his daughter, per g1. "And she always wanted to convey that to others as well, to give them confidence in themselves. That's why, in her videos, she wanted people to feel unique."

The content creator, who was based in Bogotá, Colombia, was known online for sharing beauty tips and offering her thoughts on popular cosmetic products. Her social media presence was characterized by her warm personality and genuine desire to connect with her followers. Diego also shared with local press that Sofia was on her first trip to Brazil at the time of her death and that it was "one of her dreams" to visit Rio de Janeiro.

"She had been planning this trip for months," Diego said. "She was so excited to see Christ the Redeemer and experience the culture of Brazil. She wanted to share everything with her followers. Her enthusiasm was contagious."

The Day of the Tragedy

The helicopter tour was supposed to be a highlight of the family's vacation. Murillo, her mother and grandmother had boarded the aircraft around 11 a.m. for what should have been a brief, scenic journey. The route would have taken them over some of Rio's most iconic landmarks, including the famous Christ the Redeemer statue, Sugarloaf Mountain, and the city's stunning coastline.

g1 reported that the local fire department responded to the fiery wreckage of the helicopter on Saturday at 11:11 a.m., though the response was difficult because of the remote nature of the crash site. The crash also caused the fire to spread across the wooded hillside, though military personnel who had expertise in fighting fires managed to control the blaze, per G1.

The remote location of the crash made rescue efforts challenging. Emergency responders had to navigate difficult terrain to reach the site, and the fire that broke out upon impact complicated the recovery process. The bodies of all four victims remained at the scene for several hours before they could be retrieved.

The Investigation

In a statement to the press, a lawyer for Voo Rio Panorâmico, the helicopter company operating the ride, said that it had not yet determined a cause for the crash, per g1. The lawyer also reportedly added that the company had necessary permits to operate, the aircraft's maintenance was up to date, and the pilot was appropriately licensed to fly.

The company expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and stated that it was cooperating fully with authorities. "We are deeply saddened by this tragedy," the company said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who lost their lives."

Brazil's Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center and Rio de Janeiro's Civil Police have opened investigations into the incident, reported g1. The investigations are expected to examine the helicopter's maintenance records, the pilot's qualifications, weather conditions at the time of the crash, and any other factors that may have contributed to the accident.

Investigators have also been reviewing the helicopter's flight data recorder, if one was present, and interviewing witnesses who may have seen the aircraft before it went down. The results of the investigations are expected to take several months.

A Life of Influence

Murillo had cultivated a significant following online through her beauty and lifestyle content. Her videos often featured product reviews, makeup tutorials, and personal reflections that resonated with her audience. Her authenticity and relatability had earned her a loyal fanbase, and many of her followers looked to her for inspiration and advice.

On social media, tributes have been pouring in from fans and fellow influencers alike. One follower wrote: "Sofia, you were a light in this world. Your videos brought me so much joy. Rest in peace." Another commented: "I can't believe you're gone. You had so much more to give. We'll miss you."

The Colombian influencer community has also expressed its shock and sadness at the news. Many creators have shared messages of condolences, reflecting on Murillo's talent and the impact she had on their lives.

A Mother, a Grandmother, and a Dream

Murillo's mother and grandmother were also on board the helicopter. The three generations of women had been traveling together, creating memories that were meant to last a lifetime. For Murillo's mother, the trip was an opportunity to share her love of travel with her daughter. For her grandmother, it was a chance to see a part of the world she had always dreamed of visiting.

The loss of three generations in a single tragedy has compounded the grief for the Murillo family. Diego, Sofia's father, has been left to mourn not only his daughter but also his wife and mother-in-law.

"Family was everything to Sofia," Diego said. "She loved her mother and grandmother deeply. They were her best friends and her greatest supporters. To lose them all at once is unimaginable."

Remembering Sofia

Murillo's father traveled to Rio de Janeiro to request the formal release of his daughter's body. The bodies of all four victims remain in the morgue as of Aug. 11, with the repatriation process still underway. It is expected that the bodies will be returned to Colombia in the coming days, where they will be laid to rest.

As the family prepares for the funerals, friends and supporters have begun organizing memorials to honor the young influencer's memory. Plans are being made to establish a foundation in her name, focusing on supporting young creators and promoting mental health awareness.

Diego hopes his daughter's story will also serve as a cautionary tale about the risks of helicopter tours. "I don't want anyone else to experience this pain," he said. "We need to make sure these tours are safe. We need to hold companies accountable."The loss of Sofia Murillo and her family is a devastating reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. Her father's words capture the essence of who she was: a young woman who wanted to make others feel unique and confident.

As investigations continue and the family mourns, Murillo's legacy will endure through the thousands of followers she inspired and the love she shared with those around her. Her father's plea for safety reforms may also serve as a lasting tribute to a life taken too soon.

"I just want people to remember her for the joy she brought," Diego said. "She was my everything. She was our everything."
