Sarawak's Strategic Leap: Positioning for Business Events Growth in the Asia-Pacific
A new convention centre and improved air connectivity are set to transform Sarawak into a premier destination for international business events.

Sarawak has an opportunity to tap into and drive more business events and tourism from across the wider Asia-Pacific region with the progress of the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching 2 (BCCK2) and improved air connectivity through AirBorneo. These developments, according to Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak), would strengthen Sarawak's ability to attract larger and more diverse international and national business events, positioning the state as a formidable player in the region's competitive business events landscape.
A Strategic Vision for Growth
The matter was highlighted during BESarawak's courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on Thursday, where discussions focused on the next phase of Sarawak's business events growth and strengthening collaboration in support of the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030). According to BESarawak, the discussions also highlighted infrastructure, venue, and accommodation capacity, as well as air connectivity, as important factors in strengthening Sarawak's position as a business events destination.
The Premier's engagement reflects the state government's recognition of business events as a key economic driver. The PCDS 2030, which outlines Sarawak's development roadmap, has identified tourism and business events as critical pillars for sustainable growth, particularly in the post-pandemic era. This strategic alignment ensures that business events contribute not just to immediate economic activity but to long-term capacity building across industries.
The timing is particularly significant as the Asia-Pacific business events market continues its post-pandemic recovery, with organisers increasingly seeking destinations that combine modern infrastructure, accessibility, and unique cultural experiences. Sarawak's ability to offer all three positions it favorably against established regional competitors.
Building on a Strong International Reputation
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said in the same statement that Sarawak has built a strong international reputation in business events, supported by its focus on legacy-driven outcomes. He said this has translated into more events and wider opportunities for local businesses and industries.
"With the Sarawak government's continued support for the industry, we are well positioned to build on this progress, attract bigger opportunities and ensure the benefits extend across more sectors and communities in Sarawak as competition across Asean grows," he said.
The minister's remarks underscore Sarawak's competitive positioning within Southeast Asia. As Asean nations increasingly compete for a share of the lucrative business events market, Sarawak's unique blend of cultural authenticity, natural heritage, and modern infrastructure provides a distinct advantage over more conventional destinations. The state's commitment to legacy-driven outcomes, ensuring that events leave a lasting positive impact on local communities and industries, has become a hallmark of its approach.
Infrastructure as a Catalyst
BESarawak chairman Datu Hii Chang Kee, who is also Deputy State Secretary (Operation), said stronger collaboration and coordination are essential to ensure business events contribute to Sarawak's wider development. He said the growing pipeline of larger events addressing globally relevant issues across industries should contribute to priorities such as investment, talent development, industry growth, knowledge exchange, and international partnerships.
The BCCK2 expansion, which is expected to significantly increase the state's convention capacity, will position Kuching as a viable alternative to established regional hubs like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Bangkok. The enhanced venue capacity, coupled with improved air connectivity through AirBorneo, creates a compelling proposition for event organisers seeking destinations that offer both scale and accessibility.
The BCCK2 project represents a significant investment in Sarawak's future. With modern facilities designed to accommodate large-scale international conferences, exhibitions, and corporate events, the convention centre will serve as a cornerstone of the state's business events strategy. The expansion is expected to attract events that were previously out of reach due to capacity constraints, opening up new opportunities for economic growth and international exposure.
The Air Borneo Advantage
Improved air connectivity through AirBorneo is another critical factor in Sarawak's business events strategy. The airline's expanding network of routes across the Asia-Pacific region will make Kuching more accessible to international delegates, reducing travel times and increasing the convenience of hosting events in Sarawak. Enhanced connectivity also facilitates the movement of goods and services, supporting the broader logistics and supply chain requirements of large-scale events.
The development of AirBorneo as a regional carrier reflects Sarawak's ambition to become a transportation hub in the region. By improving direct connections to key markets in Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, and beyond, the airline will play a pivotal role in attracting international events and visitors to the state.
Intentional Growth and Ecosystem Strengthening
BESarawak chief executive officer Jason Tan Chin Foo said the organisation will build on the momentum developed over the past two decades by being more intentional about the events it purs, strengthening Sarawak's business events ecosystem, and creating greater value from every opportunity secured.
BESarawak said it will continue aligning its business events pipeline with Sarawak's priority sectors to create more opportunities for knowledge, innovation and partnerships that support the state's broader development. This strategic alignment ensures that business events contribute not just to immediate economic activity but to long-term capacity building across industries.
The organisation's intentional approach involves targeting events that align with Sarawak's economic priorities, including renewable energy, digital economy, sustainable agriculture, and tourism. By focusing on events that bring together industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators, BESarawak aims to position Sarawak as a hub for thought leadership and innovation in these critical sectors.
Competition and Collaboration in Asean
As competition across Asean intensifies, Sarawak's ability to differentiate itself will be key to its success. The state's focus on legacy-driven outcomes and its commitment to sustainability and community engagement set it apart from destinations that prioritise volume over impact. By demonstrating the tangible benefits of hosting events in Sarawak, BESarawak aims to build a compelling case for event organisers to choose the state over more established competitors.
Collaboration with industry stakeholders, government agencies, and international partners will also be essential. BESarawak's efforts to strengthen the business events ecosystem include working with hotels, transport providers, and local businesses to ensure a seamless experience for event attendees. This collaborative approach enhances Sarawak's reputation as a reliable and welcoming destination.
Sarawak is positioning itself as a premier business events destination in the Asia-Pacific region through strategic infrastructure development and enhanced air connectivity. With the continued support of the Sarawak government and a clear focus on legacy-driven outcomes, the state is well-positioned to attract larger, more diverse events that contribute to its long-term development goals.
As competition across Asean intensifies, Sarawak's unique combination of cultural authenticity, natural beauty, and modern infrastructure provides a compelling proposition for event organisers seeking destinations that offer more than just convention facilities. The state's commitment to sustainability and community engagement further strengthens its appeal, ensuring that the benefits of business events are shared across sectors and communities.
The next decade will be critical for Sarawak's business events industry. With BCCK2 and AirBorneo as catalysts, the state has the opportunity to transform its economy, create jobs, and enhance its international standing. The vision is clear: to become the preferred destination for business events in the Asia-Pacific, driving growth and innovation for years to come.
