SAP SAC: Unlocking the Power of Data Connection and Data Sources

SAP SAC

SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) is a comprehensive, cloud-based business intelligence and analytics solution designed to address a wide range of data needs including planning, budgeting, forecasting, and predictive analytics. One of SAC’s most powerful features is its robust support for data connectors and data sources, which enables users to integrate and analyze data from various systems seamlessly.

Data connectors in SAP SAC are essential tools that facilitate the connection to diverse data sources for analysis. These connectors support a wide array of sources, allowing users to import and analyze data from databases, cloud storage, files, and live data connections. Among the commonly used connectors is the SAP HANA Connector, which provides access to any SAP HANA system, an in-memory database integral to SAP’s environment. Another key connector is the SAP BW Connector, enabling integration with data stored in SAP Business Warehouse. The SAP S/4HANA Connector connects with the SAP S/4HANA ERP system, offering real-time insights from this advanced ERP platform.

The SAP BusinessObjects Connector allows access to data from SAP BusinessObjects, a suite of business intelligence and reporting tools. Similarly, the OData Connector supports data consumption and publishing via the OData protocol, a standardized method for accessing data over the web. The RFC Connector facilitates communication between SAP systems using the Remote Function Call protocol, enabling function modules to be invoked across different systems. The IDOC Connector is used for data transfer between SAP systems using Intermediate Documents, a standard format for data exchange. The BAPI Connector exposes business application programming interfaces for external systems to access SAP data and functionality. The EDI Connector supports data exchange using Electronic Data Interchange, a standardized format for inter-system communication. For simpler data interactions, the Flat File Connector allows data import and export in a text-based flat file format. Additionally, the Microsoft Excel Connector enables users to connect to and access data stored in Excel spreadsheets.

To create data connections in SAP SAC, users start by opening the data connection tool, which can be a built-in feature of SAP SAC or a third-party tool. By selecting the option to create a new connection, users choose from a range of data source types, including both SAP and non-SAP systems. Essential details such as the server name, port number, database name, and credentials are entered to establish the connection. It is crucial to test the connection before saving it to ensure proper functionality. Once confirmed, the connection can be saved and used for data analysis and reporting tasks.

SAP SAC supports various data sources, enabling users to access and analyze data from different platforms. These sources include SAP HANA, SAP Business Warehouse (BW), and SAP ERP systems. For SAP S/4HANA, SAC can utilize OData services or remote function calls to extract data. Additionally, users can connect to OData services, JDBC-compatible databases, and cloud-based systems like Salesforce, SuccessFactors, and SAP Concur. CSV file uploads are also supported, allowing users to import and analyze data from simple text-based files.

To further leverage data in SAP SAC, users can create queries and convert them into models. This process begins with selecting a data source, creating a connection, and then specifying fields to be included in the query. The system generates a query that remains valid for seven days, during which users can create and save a data model.

A connection overview diagram in SAP SAC can illustrate the flow of data from various sources into SAC. This visual representation helps users understand the end-to-end data integration and flow, showcasing how different SAP and non-SAP systems are connected.

In summary, SAP Analytics Cloud provides a versatile platform for real-time data analysis and reporting, supported by a wide range of data connectors and sources. These tools allow organizations to integrate data from diverse systems, perform advanced analytics, and generate insightful reports. By leveraging SAC’s capabilities, businesses can make informed decisions, respond to market changes, and optimize their operations effectively. The flexibility and power of SAC make it a valuable solution for organizations seeking to harness their data for competitive advantage and operational excellence.
