Ruth K's Musings and Madness Blog: Vol. III
It's Quiet Uptown
Alright, so that subtitle is a lie. It hasn't been quiet at all. Not in my life, and certainly not in my uptown neighborhood. I'm sure you have all seen the news, and I won't entertain discussion of the Columbia University events here. The media circus has done enough damage. That's as close to an opinion as you'll be getting from me. When history looks back on this moment, I will make sure my piece has been said. But not here. This is my peace, not my piece. Moving on.
It's been quite a while, I know. Every time I meant to sit down and write more, there was something else to be done. New boxes to unpack, new baggage to wade through (yes, I do mean metaphysically), new adventures to be had. Since we last chatted in this hallowed space, I have gone on ghost tours, seen a stand-up Mathematician, walked in central park, gone to the Met, enjoyed several dinners with new friends, and gotten new boots. That last one isn't nearly as exciting to you probably, but I was in desperate need. I may have even talked about this last time. Truthfully, I can't remember. This is why I meant to write more. To try and keep better track.
But I can report that the settling is nearly there. Fun story, I am writing to you from my brand new desk. We plucked that sucker right off the sidewalk, brought it home, and rebuilt it. So now I have a dedicated workspace to create my chaotic messes and bring my crafts to life without taking over the couch. I like this set-up, it makes me feel like I am living in a proper home even more than before. And the bit about pulling it off the sidewalk on a random street, this too makes me feel very New York. It's not uncommon to find your treasures from the sidewalk trash, and this one such treasure is the Hope Diamond if you ask me. I can feel myself melding my Colorado soul with a little New York heart, and I'm coming to really love it. Yes, I think I can say that, as of this moment, I love New York. Perhaps tomorrow a rat will run across my foot, or the smell of trash will hit me with particular angst, or I will turn the corner and the man pissing on the car will not care, and I will grimace and question my entire life. But today, I love New York. I am happy I'm here.
I should probably mention I got a new job, and fast, too, right after I last wrote. It's a good one this time, one I'm still learning to navigate, and one I am certain I will have stories about as we go. For now, though, I will just say, I like this, too. Of course, a job is a job, and I would rather trapes about the East Village on a Saturday jaunt than sit in an office for 8 hours and work, but at least the work intrigues me. And the East Village is right there for the jaunting when I am done. It's a balance, no?
There is still so much to be done. The strangest part, regardless of how settled I feel, is the fact that I have to constantly remind myself that I have the time. I am not here on vacation, cramming every brilliant experience into a 5 day stint. I don't have to see the Met and the Natural History Museum and the park and the Empire State and the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and the...so on and so forth, all in one day. This weekend, I can walk the parks of Pier 60. Next weekend, I could take a day trip to a whole other state. And after that, the Bronx Zoo. I live here now. Can you believe that? Shit, last night's dinner was ready-in-a-New-York-minute street corner pizza. Not a novelty, just pizza. Because it's our street corner. And if you think it's silly that this blows my mind, then you're reading the wrong blog.
I think that just about does it for me. Next week I'll be fulfilling my childhood dream of visiting the Smithsonian Museum, courtesy of the bestest friend ever. I might cry a little. I am so excited I am shaking like a chihuahua on a bender. Until then, nothing but love and well wishes. There's been so much animosity in the world, we all need a little more time to love. Love to you all, cheers.
