Late in 2021, Russia began planting big numbers of colors near to Ukraine’s borders, while constantly denying it was going to attack. Also Mr Putin scrapped a 2015 peace deal for the east and recognized areas under recusant control as independent.

Russia has long defied Ukraine’s move towards the European Union and the West’s defensive military alliance, NATO. Publicizing Russia’s incursion, he criminated NATO of hanging “our major future as a nation”.

HOW FAR WILL RUSSIA GO?

By recognizing the separatist areas controlled by Russian delegates as independent, Mr Putin was telling the world they were no longer part of Ukraine. WHAT DOES PUTIN WANT?

President Putin incompletely criticized his decision to attack on NATO’s eastward expansion. He before complained Russia had “nowhere further to retreat to- do they suppose we’ll just sit actively by?”

Ukraine’s handle posted a picture of the plane with a caption: “They burned the biggest plane but our Mriya will never perish.” Weapons manufacturer Ukroboronprom estimated that restoring the “Mriya” would cost over $3 billion (2.7 billion euros) and could take over five years. Russia may have destroyed our ‘Mriya’. But they will never be able to destroy our dream of a strong, free and democratic European state. We shall prevail!”, he added.

The aircraft was unique to the world, at 84 metres long it could transport up to 250 tonnes of cargo at a speed of up to 850 kilometres per hour. They named it “Mriya”, which means dream in Ukrainian. Initially built as part of the Soviet aeronautical program, the An-225 made its first flight in 1988. After years of not flying after the fall of the Soviet Union, the only existing copy made a test flight in 2001 in Gostomel, about 20 kilometres from Kyiv.

Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines was operating it for cargo flights and was in high demand during the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. The capital Kyiv however, under a strict state-of-war curfew, continues to be on edge as the sounds of gunfire and blasts periodically reverberate through the city. As of now civilians, including three children killed in Ukraine’s conflict, while 1,115 people wounded so far. The invasion has triggered a backlash in Russia, with the police detaining more than 900 people at anti-war protests across 44 Russian cities. Raising the total detained since the assault started four days ago to over 4,000, independent protest monitoring group OVD-Info said.
