Ringgit Navigates Geopolitical Crosscurrents Mixed Opening Reflects Dollar Haven Demand and Regional Resilience
Strait of Hormuz Standoff Dominates Sentiment Local Currency Strengthens Against Euro, Pound and ASEAN Peers while Yen and US Dollar Edge Higher

The Malaysian ringgit began the trading week on a distinctly mixed note, demonstrating solid underlying strength against most major and regional currencies yet yielding marginally to the US dollar as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East kept safe-haven flows firmly in play. At the official opening on Monday morning, the local unit traded at 4.0725 to 4.0780 against the greenback, a modest softening from Friday’s closing levels of 4.0715 to 4.0765. This slight decline is not a reflection of domestic economic weakness but rather the powerful gravitational pull of the world’s reserve currency during periods of uncertainty, a dynamic that has become increasingly pronounced as developments in the Persian Gulf cast a shadow over global trade and energy markets.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid has underscored the central role of geopolitical risk in shaping current market sentiment, pointing specifically to the diplomatic impasse over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran had reportedly proposed reopening the vital shipping lane to commercial traffic within seven days, an offer that was rejected by United States President Donald Trump. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi subsequently confirmed that Tehran would await an official response from international mediators, leaving the situation unresolved and the risk of sustained disruption very much alive. The Strait carries roughly one-fifth of all globally traded oil, and any prolonged closure or restricted passage would ripple through energy prices, supply chains, and inflation expectations worldwide, making the US dollar, US treasuries, and gold the default choices for investors seeking shelter. Alongside these geopolitical concerns, traders are also carefully monitoring upcoming United States labour market figures, which will offer fresh insight into the strength of the American economy and help determine the timing and pace of Federal Reserve interest rate adjustment decisions that invariably move currencies across the emerging-market world, including the ringgit.
Against every other major currency, the ringgit’s performance was decidedly more positive. It firmed against the euro, climbing to 4.6333 to 4.6395 from Friday’s range of 4.6378 to 4.6435, and advanced against the British pound to 5.3867 to 5.3940, compared with 5.3907 to 5.3973 previously. The Japanese yen was the only other major currency to move against the ringgit in the opposite direction, with the local unit easing to 2.5864 to 2.5900 from 2.5764 to 2.5797. This reflects the Bank of Japan’s decisive shift toward higher interest rates, which has lifted the yen’s appeal to yield-seeking investors and created a more compelling alternative to both the US dollar and regional currencies. It is a reminder that monetary policy divergence, not just risk aversion, is reshaping currency flows across Asia.
Within the ASEAN region, the ringgit held its ground and, in several cases, gained ground. It edged higher against the Singapore dollar, inching up to 3.1851 to 3.1897 from 3.1858 to 3.1900, and posted a more noticeable improvement against the Thai baht, rising to 12.1712 to 12.1946 from 12.2036 to 12.2234. It traded completely unchanged against both the Indonesian rupiah, steady at 227.4 to 227.8, and the Philippine peso at 6.52 to 6.53, a sign of orderly, stable conditions within the regional trading bloc and an encouraging contrast with the volatility seen elsewhere.
Looking ahead, the ringgit’s near-term path will be shaped overwhelmingly by events outside domestic control. A meaningful de-escalation in the Persian Gulf would immediately reduce the US dollar’s safe-haven premium, potentially allowing the ringgit to recoup Monday’s modest losses and test stronger levels. Conversely, any further deterioration in relations or actual disruption to shipping would reinforce the greenback’s dominance and test the currency’s resilience. The tone of US economic data and Federal Reserve communications will also remain critical, as markets calibrate how long interest rates will remain elevated and whether further hikes are in prospect. For now, the message from the trading desks is clear: domestic fundamentals provide a solid foundation, but external uncertainty is the decisive factor in daily pricing, and every diplomatic and economic signal will be watched closely in the days ahead.
