Richland Airport Apron Upgrade Underway to Boost Safety and Capacity

Port of Benton project includes pavement reinforcement, reconfiguration and expanded aircraft parking.

Construction has commenced at the Richland Airport to enhance the functionality, safety, and durability of its main apron, marking a significant infrastructure investment for the Port of Benton. Work began on August 18 and is expected to continue through September 30, with the project aimed at modernizing the airport's operational capabilities while addressing long-standing pavement and space utilization challenges.

The project, managed by the Port of Benton, will involve the reconfiguration of portions of the main apron to optimize the use of available space. Key improvements include expanding aircraft parking capacity, protecting existing hangars from potential damage, and strengthening weaker pavement areas that have deteriorated over time due to heavy usage and weather-related wear. The upgrades are intended to extend the lifespan of the apron and reduce future maintenance costs, providing long-term benefits to airport users and the broader community.

Funding for the project comes from multiple sources. A Bipartisan Infrastructure Law grant, totaling $1.1 million, covers the majority of the cost, with the port contributing a 5% match. Additionally, a $57,000 Airport Improvement Program grant, also with a 5% port match, further supports the work. The combination of federal and local funding reflects the collaborative approach to maintaining and improving critical aviation infrastructure across the country.

Construction will proceed in two designated work areas, requiring temporary closures during the project period. The area highlighted in blue on the port's published map will be closed for the duration of the entire project, while a smaller area, marked in green, will be closed for just four days. The specific dates for the shorter closure have not yet been determined, and the port has indicated that updates will be provided as the schedule becomes clearer. Pilots, tenants, and airport users are advised to plan accordingly and remain aware of the temporary access restrictions.

These improvements come at a time when regional aviation is experiencing increased activity, driven by both commercial and general aviation demand. The Richland Airport serves as a vital transportation hub for the Tri-Cities area, supporting business travel, medical flights, cargo operations, and recreational flying. Upgrading the apron ensures that the facility can accommodate the growing number of aircraft based at the airport and visiting from elsewhere, while also enhancing safety for ground operations.

Quentin Wright, airport manager for the port, emphasized the importance of the investment. "These improvements will help Richland Airport better serve the needs of pilots, tenants and visitors while positioning the airport for future growth," he said in a statement. "We appreciate the patience and cooperation of our tenants and airport users as we complete this important infrastructure investment."

The Richland Airport's main apron is a critical component of the airport's overall infrastructure, serving as the primary parking and staging area for aircraft. Over time, the apron's pavement had begun to show signs of stress, with weak spots and surface cracking reducing its load-bearing capacity. The current project addresses these issues directly, not only repairing damaged sections but also strengthening the pavement to better handle heavier aircraft and increased traffic volumes.

In addition to pavement reinforcement, the reconfiguration of the apron layout is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion during peak operational periods. The expanded aircraft parking capacity will allow the airport to accommodate additional based aircraft and transient visitors, supporting economic development and enhancing the airport's appeal as a destination for aviation-related businesses and events.

The project reflects broader trends in airport infrastructure investment across the United States, where many facilities are undergoing modernization to meet the demands of a changing aviation landscape. With federal funding through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, airports of all sizes are receiving critical upgrades that might otherwise have been delayed or deferred due to budget constraints.

As the work progresses, the port has committed to maintaining communication with tenants and users, providing updates on closure schedules and access arrangements. While temporary disruptions are unavoidable during construction, the long-term benefits of the project are expected to far outweigh the short-term inconveniences. Upon completion, the Richland Airport will emerge with a safer, more durable, and more functional apron, ready to serve the community for years to come.
