The roar of Formula 1 engines is set to return to Sepang International Circuit from October 2 to 4, 2026, bringing with it more than the thrill of elite motorsport. The Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix is expected to welcome over 110,000 spectators, with the Immigration Department estimating as many as 300,000 foreign visitors arriving for the event. Beyond the race itself, the occasion has become a catalyst for infrastructure renewal, cultural showcase, and economic opportunity across Selangor and the broader Klang Valley, turning a single weekend of sport into a platform for long-term tourism growth and local business vitality.

Preparation has been thorough and widespread. Sepang Member of Parliament Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu confirmed that major infrastructure upgrades have been carried out across the district to accommodate the influx of visitors. The Federal Government allocated RM16 million to resurface, maintain, and upgrade roads, including FT26, FT27, FT29, and FT34, while the state government provided RM1.5 million for improvements to Jalan B48. These works extend beyond surface repairs to include enhanced lighting, safety features, and facility upgrades designed not only to serve race weekend crowds but to benefit residents and local businesses for years to come. Aiman Athirah emphasised that the event will lift demand across hospitality, transport, food and beverage, and retail sectors throughout Sepang, Cyberjaya, Putrajaya, and the greater Klang Valley, creating a ripple effect that reaches far beyond the circuit gates. She also highlighted the chance to showcase lesser-known local attractions from the dragon fruit orchards of Sungai Pelek and the coastal beauty of Pantai Bagan Lalang to the cultural heritage of the Mah Meri Orang Asli community, turning race visitors into explorers of Selangor’s diverse natural and cultural landscape.

Local enterprises are already stepping forward to capture the momentum. HL Dragon Fruit Eco Farm and Restaurant, located in Sungai Pelek, will offer a 10% to 20% discount to anyone presenting a race ticket throughout the promotion period from October 1 to 15. Founder Lydia Goh explained that visitors will be invited to tour the orchards and learn about the fruit’s local cultivation history, while the farm’s restaurant will serve creative dragon fruit-inspired dishes rooted in a true farm-to-table philosophy. The initiative is designed to encourage fans to extend their stay and discover the district’s rural charm alongside the excitement of the Grand Prix.

Tourism Malaysia has seized the international spotlight with the Citrawarna Speed Festival 2026, running in parallel with the race as part of the broader Visit Malaysia 2026–2027 campaign. Deputy director-general Mohd Akbal Setia outlined how the festival blends motorsport energy with cultural heritage across venues at IOI City Mall Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1, and Sama-Sama Hotel. The Colours of Speed segment features racing memorabilia, supercar displays, and a driving simulator competition open to the public, while Colours of Art and Culture brings traditional music, dance, handicrafts, and interactive experiences to centre stage. The highlight will be the Colours of Parade on October 3, where 1,500 performers from across Malaysia will showcase the nation’s multicultural diversity through vibrant costumes, music, and dance a vivid introduction to the country’s identity for visitors from every continent.

Selangor is placing food at the heart of its welcome with the Selangor Mega Food Festival 2026, held at Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA just 11 kilometres from the circuit from October 2 to 4. Organised by Tourism Selangor, the gathering will feature over 50 vendors presenting beloved local dishes such as satay Kajang, nasi ambeng, rojak Klang, and punten, alongside zones dedicated to traditional state cuisine and modern urban favourites. The three-day programme includes cooking demonstrations, eating competitions, do-it-yourself workshops, traditional games, and tourism information booths, all designed to give visitors a taste of Selangor’s culinary heritage while guiding them toward further exploration across the state. Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Chua Yee Ling noted that the Grand Prix strengthens Selangor’s standing as a premier tourism gateway, while corporate communications manager Ahmad Nazri Tashriq Rahmat added that food offers the most direct and memorable way to connect visitors with the stories, traditions, and communities that shape the region.

The hospitality sector is already feeling the impact. Hotels in Sepang and Putrajaya saw exceptionally strong early booking demand, with many properties reaching full occupancy during the race period. While approximately 15% of bookings were later cancelled in some cases due to difficulty securing event tickets the overall outlook remains robust, with spillover benefits extending to accommodation providers across the wider region. Selangor’s chairman of youth, sports and entrepreneurship, Mohd Najwan Halimi, framed the event as more than a sporting fixture: it is an opportunity to showcase world-class infrastructure, boost the national and state profile, attract future international events, and inspire a new generation of young Malaysians toward careers in engineering, technology, and sports management.

Ultimately, the return of Formula 1 to Sepang is about more than motorsport. It is a moment where global attention meets local pride where upgraded roads, vibrant festivals, welcoming dining tables, and warm hospitality combine to tell the world that Malaysia is ready to host, to welcome, and to thrive. The engines will fall silent eventually, but the connections made, the impressions formed, and the momentum built will endure long after the chequered flag has fallen.
