Quiet Joy: Sophia Bush and Ashlyn Harris’s Intimate Wedding and the Beauty of Choosing Their Own Way

A Summer Ceremony in Upstate New York Family-First Celebration Memoir and Visibility as Acts of Truth and Love

For two women who have spent so much of their lives in the public eye, the most meaningful celebration of their love was one they kept entirely to themselves and their family first. Sophia Bush, the beloved actress known for One Tree Hill, and Ashlyn Harris, the celebrated former professional soccer player, quietly married in an intimate ceremony in upstate New York during the summer of 2025. The news was shared this week in excerpts from Bush’s forthcoming memoir and in interviews with Vogue and PEOPLE, revealing a wedding day defined not by fanfare, but by wildflowers, roasted marshmallows, and the quiet, profound joy of claiming a moment fully their own.

A Day Without Pressure

The couple chose to be surrounded only by Ashlyn’s two children, Sloane and Ocean, in a setting stripped of the expectations that often accompany lives lived in the spotlight. “When you get to this stage in your life, you begin to unpack what’s yours and what’s always sort of been for everyone else,” Bush told Vogue. After years of having her personal life examined, discussed, and at times judged publicly, she wanted this milestone to belong to them before it belonged to anyone else.

The result was a celebration as natural as it was heartfelt. The children ran freely through the grounds; they picked flowers from the property, and Sloane proudly held the gathered blooms. As evening fell, they all gathered to roast marshmallows together over a fire. “It was so precious, and zero pressure,” Bush recalled. “I will never forget it, and I think wedding days sometimes aren’t like that.” Ashlyn agreed, noting how special it was for the children to be part of something gentle and unhurried: “It wasn’t this pressure-filled day that’s too much for young kids.”

Telling Their Story in Person

Rather than issuing a public statement immediately afterward, the newlyweds chose to travel across the country to share their news personally with the people closest to them. Only once everyone they loved knew did they feel ready to step forward together. For Bush, the shift in language felt like a revelation: “You’re not my partner, you know? You’re my wife. And it feels so amazing to say that.”

The wedding revelation arrives alongside the October 27 release of Bush’s first memoir, And I Will Tell You Mine: Notes from a Life in Progress, a book nearly a decade in the making. “For nine years, I said no,” she shared of the long journey to put her story on paper. “I think when your life finally feels like all the pieces are in the right place, you start to realize why people might want you to share your story.”

Love, Visibility, and Purpose

The path to this moment has been one of courage and clarity. Bush and Harris were first linked in October 2023; Bush publicly came out as queer and confirmed their relationship in a moving Glamour cover story in 2024. For both women, stepping forward is never just about themselves. “This conversation is not about Sophia and I,” Harris explained. “We know the love we share. The visibility piece matters” especially for young people who may not yet see themselves reflected in stories of commitment and joy. Both serve on the board of the Human Rights Campaign and have long stood as advocates for LGBTQ+ equality.

Bush writes in her memoir of finding inspiration in the decades-long marriage of Harris’ grandparents, and of realising Ashlyn is the person with whom she wants to build her own life, a choice made all the more meaningful by the grace with which she has embraced the possibility of lasting love again. She was previously married to Chad Michael Murray and later to Grant Hughes; those experiences taught her that relationships can end, but also that her heart remains open to what is real, right, and true.

A Future Rooted in What Matters

Together, they have built something that feels entirely their own: a blended family, a partnership of equals, and a life rooted in purpose. In an era where so much is performed, polished, and posted, their choice to keep their wedding day private first is a reminder that the most precious moments are best savoured slowly. Now, as they step forward together as wives, they do so knowing their story is not just for them it is for everyone who has ever waited to feel seen, to feel safe, and to finally say “I do” on their own terms.
