Pens Vs Pencils

Debating the Best Office Supplies

When completing work in a physical rather than electronic format, there are two main tools you can choose from when writing down important information. Those choices are pens and pencils. They are both designed to complete the same task, but have different features. And along with that comes advantages and disadvantages to both. If you decide to work with a pen, you have to be extra careful to write legibly and not misspell a word as well. This is because a pen does not have an eraser. But there are pens known as erasable pens which can erase mistakes, but the erasers tend to not be as good as pencil erasers. In general, another advantage about pens is that you can place a cap over the point or push the side opposite of it in order to close the pen. This helps prevent someone from accidentally poking him or herself with the point. In addition, a pen requires less force to clearly write with in comparison to a pencil.

Similarly to a pen, a pencil also has its own advantages and disadvantages. The main benefit of a pencil is the eraser that comes with it. If the user makes a mistake, then he or she can simply flip the pencil over and use the eraser to remove it. The eraser will do a good job removing the unwanted marking(s) as long as it isn’t too dried out. The main disadvantage of pencils is that they require more force to legibly write something. Also the point can break (sometimes often). However, this issue can be resolved with a pencil sharpener. This is a tool that is specifically for pencils. Another solution would be to use a mechanical pencil. With this type of pencil, you can push down on the eraser end to use and store the lead from inside the pencil. If a little bit of lead breaks, then you can simply replace it by pushing down on the eraser side. In addition, you can add more lead inside this type of pencil which allows it to last longer.

My recommendation is that pens should primarily be used by adults. This is because the workload of your average adult can be quite a lot and completing it with a pen requires less physical effort when writing. Also, adults will use pens responsibly and be sure to close or retract the points whenever they are not using them. Plus it also looks more professional when the work required for his or her job is completed in pen.

As for pencils, my suggestion would be for children to use these when in school. Kids tend to have a lot of energy and may apply lots of force at times when using a pencil and therefore break the writing end. Therefore, be sure to keep a pencil sharpener nearby in this setting. In addition, kids may make a mark on an assignment that they didn’t truly intend and will want to remove the mark. In other words, the eraser will be useful for them.

As you might already know, there is no right or wrong answer as to which writing tool is the best. Ultimately it is up to you to decide which is best for you personally. This will likely be influenced by who you are and what your needs are. If you tend to make a lot of mistakes when writing, then a pencil or erasable pen might be fitting for you. If you are completing important tasks at your job, then a pen might be the better choice. Choose the best tool for your situation and tasks and you will do well.
