Obsession Isn't Everything

A Tale of 3 Strangers

Obsession Isn't Everything is a beautiful coming-of-age story about 3 young teenagers who help each other learn more about themselves. Though it is quite unknown, it could really help kids to find themselves. The video was created in 2018, though it wasn't shared with the public until 2020.

At the beginning of the story, three kids run into each other. Literally. They crashed right into each other. The reason no one could see where they were going was that they were distracted, or obsessed, rather, with their own lives. One character, Emily, expresses her apologies for running into these strangers; she was just too busy reading a dictionary. (Specifically, the word quadrophonic.) Viewers then see that Chloe has an addiction to her phone, and Joshua is a germophobe.

Let's start with Chloe. She's a preppy gal, dressed in a red dress. Her hair is in a high ponytail with a red flower attached to it. She has pearls around her neck, bracelets on her wrist, and a phone in hand.

Next there's Joshua. In the first clip of the episode, Joshua is seen walking out of his house. He's carrying a blue mesh bag and spraying himself with bug spray. After the squad collides and Joshua makes sure everyone's alright, he pulls hand sanitizer out of his bag and tells the girls that he needs to use it because he ran into them.

Emily is dressed modestly in denim shorts and a blue t-shirt that depicts a whale. She's also wearing black flats and purple glasses. She has a backpack, and she's carrying a dictionary, of course.

Let's get into the plot of this story. In the beginning, everyone introduces themselves and we see that this is the first time they're meeting each other. In the next scene, Chloe is walking down a different street and notices Emily standing outside her house looking at a phone with a confused expression on her face. Chloe walks toward her and offers to help her. Then we can see that Emily's phone is actually a flip phone, and she's confused because her friend's sending her initialisms that she doesn't understand. Chloe translates them for her, and the girls get to know each other better. Comedically, we learn that Emily used to use a walkie-talkie before upgrading to a flip phone.

After Emily's confusion is cleared up, Chloe remembers that she needs to study for an upcoming math test! She needs Emily's help to be able to pass, so they go inside for a study session. Emily tries to help Chloe understand her Geometry, but Chloe uses her phone to look up all the answers. Eventually, Emily convinces her that she doesn't need her phone to find the answers, and Chloe starts to move away from her addiction.

The next day, Chloe reveals to Emily that she got a perfect score on her math test! Emily is wildly impressed with her new friend that she offers to have a "celebratory sleepover" with her, and Chloe agrees.

But the sleepover is off to a rough start when all Emily wants to do is read her dictionary, so Chloe gets bored quickly. Chloe starts to find games to play and Emily starts to see that there is so much to do in the real world, instead of in fictional ones.

At one point, the girls go outside and notice Joshua walking down the street. They start a conversation and Chloe invites the others to the community pool. Joshua claims that he can't go because there are so many germs in the pool, but finally he was convinced.

Unfortunately, Joshua still had qualms about swimming in a community pool, so when Emily and Chloe were having an enjoyable afternoon in the pool, Joshua was sitting on the deck miserably. After hours of trying to convince Joshua that the pool water can't hurt him, the girls invite him to cannonball with him. He was about to back out again but Emily and Chloe pushed him in. Joshua started to have a great time and move past his fear of germs.

At the end of the video, each of the characters learns that life can be so much more enjoyable after they move past their obsessions; this is a very valuable thing for people to keep in mind even today. Here's a quote from the end of the video:

Chloe: You know, I really learned something this week.

Emily & Joshua: What?

Chloe: That, I don't need my phone to have a good time.

Emily: Yeah, and I learned that always having my nose in a book really isolates me from the outside world.

Joshua: And I learned that being a complete germophobe really takes a lot of enjoyment out of life.

Everyone: And we all learned... Obsession Isn't Everything.
