Novak Djokovic Opens Up About "Health Issue" After Shocking Cincinnati Open Defeat
The 39-year-old tennis legend fell to his knees and appeared to vomit during his second-round match, later revealing he's been dealing with the condition "for many years."

Novak Djokovic is opening up about a health issue that he's been "dealing with for many years" after a shocking second-round defeat at the Cincinnati Open.
During his match against Argentina's Thiago Agustín Tirante on Saturday, August 15, the 39-year-old tennis star suddenly fell to his hands and knees, calling for a medical timeout in the middle of their second set. Videos shared on social media show Djokovic falling to his knees and appearing to vomit into a towel. He then sat on a bench, took his shirt off, and placed an ice pack on his head as a physio and a doctor tended to him.
Despite the visible distress, Djokovic managed to finish the match, ultimately losing 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. "First and foremost, I congratulate my opponent today," Djokovic told reporters after the match, per Forbes and the ATP Tour. "Honestly, it hasn't been a pleasant match for me. That's how I've felt. It hasn't been the first time, and it won't be the last. That's just how it is."
The athletes were playing amid extreme heat and humidity in Ohio, conditions that would challenge even the fittest competitors. However, Djokovic was quick to clarify that the weather wasn't the primary issue. "Conditions aren't the problem," he insisted. "It's because of a health issue I have. I've been dealing with it for many years now. It causes me a lot of problems, especially when there's a lot of humidity and heat."
The Serbian superstar acknowledged that he had anticipated the humid conditions but explained that other factors exacerbated the situation. "I did anticipate it [would be humid], but there are all these things, like nerves and everything involved that make it worse, and that's what happened," Djokovic continued.
The match was a difficult one for the 24-time Grand Slam champion, who has consistently been one of the most dominant forces in tennis history. His defeat to the 25-year-old Tirante marks yet another unexpected early exit in a career that has seen its share of surprises.
When asked if he might play Cincinnati again next year, Djokovic admitted that "it seems more likely that I won't be back next year." However, he left the door open, adding, "But let's see what the future holds. I hope I do."
For his part, Tirante described his victory against Djokovic as "the best win of my career." The Argentine, ranked significantly lower than his legendary opponent, handled the pressure with remarkable composure. "I think I really did a good job inside the court," he told reporters, per Forbes. "I managed very well the nerves of playing against a legend like Novak."
Tirante also dedicated the win to his loved ones back home. "Thinking about my family and my friends that are in Argentina watching me, they are really happy to watch me on TV," he said. "They are in Argentina, but they are in my head as well."
Djokovic's health revelation has sparked concern among fans and the tennis community, many of whom have watched the champion battle through physical adversity throughout his career. The issue he described, exacerbated by humidity and heat, appears to be a chronic condition that he has learned to manage but cannot fully control.
The Cincinnati Open has long been a key stop on the ATP Tour, serving as a warm-up for the US Open, one of tennis's four Grand Slam events. Djokovic's early exit raises questions about his fitness and preparation for the final major of the year. However, the Serbian has repeatedly proven his resilience, often using setbacks as motivation for comebacks.
While Djokovic's future in Cincinnati remains uncertain, one thing is clear: his health will be a factor in whatever decisions he makes about his playing schedule. For now, fans will be watching closely as the champion navigates this latest challenge, hoping to see him back on the court at full strength.
