N9 Polls: 859,760 Voters Set to Cast Ballots in 16th State Election
Election Commission targets preliminary results by 10 pm as 401 polling centres prepare for smooth voting process

The stage is set for one of the most closely watched state elections in recent memory as 859,760 registered voters, including 7,391 postal voters, prepare to head to the polls tomorrow to determine the composition of the 16th Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly. With 36 state seats up for grabs, the outcome will shape the state’s political direction for the next five years and serve as a critical barometer of national sentiment ahead of future general elections.
Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun confirmed that 401 polling centres comprising 1,668 individual voting channels will open simultaneously from 8 am to 6 pm across all seven districts of Negeri Sembilan. To ensure the integrity, efficiency, and accessibility of the process, a total of 15,344 election officers have been deployed, representing a significant increase in manpower compared to previous state polls. These personnel include presiding officers, clerks, police officers, and party agents tasked with overseeing every stage of voting and counting.
Ramlan made these remarks after inspecting the Official Vote Counting Centre at Dewan Perdana Tampin today, where final logistical checks were underway. He emphasized that the EC has implemented enhanced standard operating procedures to minimize wait times and prevent overcrowding, particularly in high-density urban constituencies.
Timeline for Results and Transparency Measures
Commenting on the expected timing of the election outcome, Ramlan stated that the EC is targeting preliminary results to be announced as early as 10 pm tomorrow, with full official results expected to be finalized and certified before midnight. This accelerated timeline reflects improvements in digital tabulation systems and streamlined communication protocols between polling stations and district-level counting centres.
"We have invested heavily in training and technology to ensure that every vote is counted accurately and reported promptly," Ramlan said. "Transparency is our top priority. All party agents and independent observers will have full access to the counting process, and we encourage the public to rely solely on official EC channels for verified results."
The EC has also activated a dedicated hotline and real-time online dashboard at https://prn.bernama.com/n9 to provide live updates, voter information, and FAQs throughout election day.
Key Battlegrounds in Tampin District
Tampin, a historically competitive district with three state assembly seats—Gemas, Gemencheh, and Repah has drawn intense attention due to its demographic diversity and shifting political alignments. A total of 77,725 registered voters are eligible to cast ballots here, making it one of the larger electoral clusters in the state.
Gemas: This seat features a heated three-cornered contest that could split the opposition vote. Incumbent Ridzuan Ahmad of WAWASAN faces off against Siti Aishah Seman @ Othman representing Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Azman Abdullah from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu). Analysts note that Gemas has seen significant youth voter registration since the last election, potentially altering traditional voting patterns.
Gemencheh: A straight fight between incumbent Suhaimizan Bizar of Barisan Nasional (BN) and challenger Abd Latib A. Tambi from PH. This constituency has traditionally leaned BN, but PH’s grassroots mobilization efforts in rural Felda settlements have narrowed the margin in recent cycles.
Repah: Another one-on-one contest sees Koh Kim Swee of MCA challenging the incumbent S. Veerapan from PH. Repah’s mixed urban-rural electorate and strong Chinese-Malaysian population make it a bellwether for multiracial coalition performance.
Final Preparations and Voter Readiness
A Bernama survey conducted at the Official Vote Counting Centre in Dewan Perdana Tampin found that all final preparations were proceeding smoothly. Staff were observed testing electronic counting devices, organizing sealed ballot boxes, and conducting final briefings for volunteers. Security personnel have also established perimeter controls and traffic management plans to ensure safe access to polling stations.
Voters are reminded to bring their original MyKad identity cards and to verify their designated polling stations via the EC website, MySPR app, or SMS service (15888#MYKAD) prior to heading out. First-time voters and senior citizens are encouraged to arrive early to avoid peak-hour congestion.
As Negeri Sembilan braces for election day, the combination of robust institutional preparation, heightened civic engagement, and competitive races across multiple constituencies promises a defining moment in the state’s democratic journey.
