MyNews Holdings Bhd faces a period of sustained pressure on its profit margins as it presses forward with strategic restructuring, technology modernisation, and new business initiatives whose benefits will take time to materialise. Analysts broadly acknowledge the necessity of these investments, yet warn that the associated costs will precede any measurable efficiency gains, keeping earnings growth subdued in the near term even as top-line revenue remains stable. Two leading research houses have outlined differing but cautious outlooks, with RHB Research adjusting forecasts downward to reflect higher operating expenses and Maybank Investment Bank flagging broader economic headwinds that may further constrain performance.

RHB Research has been the more cautious of the two, cutting earnings forecasts for financial years 2026 through 2028 by 14%, 14% and 13% respectively to account for elevated cost structures and a slower-than-previously-anticipated margin recovery. In its analysis, the firm explains that near-term spending is unlikely to ease significantly as management continues rationalising underperforming outlets while simultaneously building out technological capabilities that raise the group’s fixed-cost base. Newly incorporated in June 2026, MyNews Tech will serve as the internal engine for information systems development and digital transformation, while the upcoming Myvndr automated vending business, scheduled to launch in financial year 2027, represents another capital-intensive initiative designed to expand the group’s reach beyond its traditional convenience store footprint. RHB notes clearly that while these projects are expected to boost productivity and operational resilience over time, the substantial upfront investment required will occur well in advance of any meaningful efficiency returns, creating a multi-quarter lag between expenditure and benefit.

Despite these pressures, revenue momentum is projected to remain steady as customer traffic patterns normalise from the third quarter onward. The group’s core network of convenience stores continues to serve essential daily needs across Malaysia, offering a stable operational foundation even as consumer sentiment fluctuates. What is changing is not the volume of business, but the cost of doing business differently, shifting from established but potentially less efficient practices toward automated, data-driven, and digitally integrated systems that require heavy initial outlay but promise leaner, more scalable operations in the longer run.

Maybank Investment Bank has retained its earnings estimates unchanged, though its outlook is tempered by broader macroeconomic concerns. It points to uncertainty stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has kept fuel and logistics costs elevated and softened consumer spending sentiment across the board. Against this backdrop, rising store operating expenses may suppress sequential earnings growth even as MyNews pursues its expansion and digitalisation agenda. The bank nonetheless affirms the soundness of the group’s strategic direction: growing its physical store footprint, accelerating fresh food sales as a key differentiator and higher-margin category, and overhauling supply chain and back-office processes through digital integration to drive lasting efficiency gains. These efforts are seen as essential positioning regardless of immediate results, building resilience that will serve the company well once the external environment stabilises.

Recent third-quarter results underscore the mixed picture. A net profit of RM4 million for the quarter brought cumulative earnings for the first nine months of financial year 2026 to RM8 million, representing 71% of Maybank IB’s full-year forecast. While this suggests the company is tracking toward its annual targets, the pace of profit generation reflects the squeeze between rising costs and revenue growth that is not yet robust enough to fully offset them. The broader convenience store industry itself faces a testing landscape, with households tightening discretionary spending and operators contending with persistent inflation in input and operational costs, challenges that extend beyond any single business to shape the competitive environment as a whole.

What emerges from both assessments is a company in transition, absorbing short-term strain in pursuit of long-term strength. The margin compression is not being driven by falling sales or market share loss, but by deliberate choice: investing in fewer but stronger locations, smarter technology, new business models, and fresher product lines that will set MyNews apart once the investments mature. The road ahead will require patience and discipline, as the benefits are not immediate and external conditions remain unpredictable. Yet the strategy remains consistent in building a more efficient, more capable, and more versatile retail platform, and it is that foundation that will determine how strongly MyNews emerges when the pressure eventually eases.
