Mia Goth Files for Divorce: The End of a Decade-Long, On-and-Off Relationship
Petition Filed October 6 Irreconcilable Differences Cited Custody and Support Sought From 2012 Meeting to 2025 Separation Relocation, Arrest, and Legal Resolution Two Careers Diverging

After more than a dozen years of coming together, pulling away, and finding their way back, Mia Goth has officially filed for divorce from Shia LaBeouf. The petition, submitted in Los Angeles County on Tuesday, October 6, cites “irreconcilable differences” and formally records their date of separation as July 28, 2025, marking the legal end of a partnership that began on a film set, weathered false starts and public scrutiny, and ultimately could not sustain itself. For Goth, 32, the filing is also a declaration of independence: she is seeking primary custody of their four‑year‑old daughter and asking the court to end any claim either might have to spousal support, choosing to build her next chapter entirely on her own terms.
A Relationship Defined by Coming and Going
Goth and LaBeouf first met in 2012 during the production of Nymphomaniac: Vol. II, drawn together professionally and personally from the start. Their connection was intense and immediate, and in 2016 they travelled to Las Vegas for what appeared to be a wedding complete with an Elvis‑themed ceremony. Yet it later emerged that the pair had never legally filed the necessary paperwork; a county clerk confirmed there was no record of a marriage licence, meaning their union was ceremonial rather than legal. They separated in 2018 and filed divorce papers at that time, only to reconcile: by 2020, they were photographed wearing wedding bands again, rebuilding their bond and welcoming a daughter in 2022.
Those close to them described their dynamic as “always complicated.” It was a relationship that seemed to exist in cycles of deep commitment followed by distance, public devotion balanced against private strain. For years, they navigated it largely outside the full glare of headlines, but the pattern would eventually prove unsustainable.
The 2025 Split and LaBeouf’s Move to New Orleans
The final separation became public in early 2026. Sources confirmed that Goth had “encouraged” LaBeouf to move out of their shared Los Angeles home, telling him she loved him but did not need him to stay. She was, observers noted, focused on her own flourishing career and above all on protecting stability for their young daughter. LaBeouf relocated to New Orleans, a city he reportedly chose because he had grown unhappy in Los Angeles, for a fresh start that would quickly take a difficult turn.
On February 17, during Mardi Gras celebrations, he was arrested and charged with two counts of simple battery following an alleged altercation at a local bar. The contrast between the serious nature of the charges and his public behaviour was striking: the very next day, he was photographed dancing on Bourbon Street, and later posted “Free me” to his social media account. The case unfolded slowly through the spring, and in June, LaBeouf entered a guilty plea to a misdemeanor battery charge. He was sentenced to two years’ probation, court‑mandated alcohol rehabilitation, sensitivity training, and anger management classes a formal reckoning with behaviour that had drawn concern from multiple quarters.
Goth’s Filing: Clear, Firm, and Forward‑Looking
By October, Goth had moved from separation to legal action. Her filing is straightforward and decisive: she seeks both legal and physical custody of their daughter, meaning the child will reside primarily with her and she will be responsible for major decisions regarding her upbringing. Crucially, Goth has asked the court to dismiss any possibility of spousal support being awarded to either party a choice that underscores her self‑reliance and removes financial entanglement as their marriage is dissolved. She is not seeking payments from LaBeouf, nor offering them; she simply wants a clean break.
Diverging Lives, Separate Trajectories
As the legal process proceeds, their careers and public profiles are moving in very different directions. Goth has emerged as one of the most compelling actors of her generation, earning acclaim for MaXXXine, Frankenstein, and The Odyssey, with the high‑profile Star Wars: Starfighter among her upcoming projects. She is building a body of work defined by ambition, range, and consistent momentum. LaBeouf, meanwhile, continues to face scrutiny beyond the courts: a 2025 documentary examined allegations of emotional abuse within his controversial acting collective, and his professional opportunities remain uncertain in the wake of his legal troubles.
A source close to Goth summed up her mindset: “She loves him, but she also doesn’t need him. She’s very independent. She has her own life, her own career and her priority is their daughter.” After more than a decade of shared beginnings and endings, this is the one that sticks not with drama, but with quiet resolve. Goth is stepping forward on her own, carrying her daughter and her career forward, and leaving the past exactly where it belongs.
