Malaysia's and Cambodia's long-standing trade ties are gaining fresh momentum, with bilateral trade continuing to expand strongly and creating new opportunities for Malaysian companies to deepen their presence in the Cambodian market. The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) is leading 26 Malaysian companies on an Export Acceleration Mission (EAM) to Phnom Penh from August 18 to 21, 2026, marking a significant step in strengthening economic ties between the two Southeast Asian nations.

Led by MATRADE chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, the mission brings together companies from key sectors, including food and beverages, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), automotive parts and components, and lifestyle products. The diverse delegation reflects the breadth of opportunities available in Cambodia, which has emerged as one of Southeast Asia's fastest-growing economies.

Record-Breaking Trade Figures

The mission comes as trade between the two countries continues to strengthen at an impressive pace. Bilateral trade surged 51.1% to RM3.32 billion (US$833.2 million) in the first half of 2026, compared with RM2.20 billion (US$501.4 million) in the corresponding period last year. This remarkable growth underscores the deepening economic integration between the two nations and the increasing importance of Cambodia as a trading partner for Malaysia.

Malaysia's exports to Cambodia rose 40.9% to RM2.45 billion (US$616.1 million), driven by petroleum products, manufactures of metal, textiles, apparel and footwear, chemicals and chemical products, and processed food. These sectors represent areas where Malaysian companies have developed significant competitive advantages, and the growing demand from Cambodia provides a valuable outlet for their products.

Cambodia's economy has been expanding rapidly, driven by a young and dynamic workforce, increasing foreign investment, and a growing middle class with rising disposable incomes. This economic transformation has created substantial opportunities for Malaysian exporters, who are well-positioned to meet the country's growing demand for goods and services.

Building on Success

MATRADE chief executive officer Datuk Indera Abu Bakar Yusof said the latest mission builds on the agency's previous success in connecting Malaysian companies with business opportunities in Cambodia, reflecting growing interest among local exporters in the market.

"In 2025, MATRADE led a targeted mission of nine Malaysian companies which successfully conducted 104 business-to-business (B2B) meetings and generated RM41.3 million in total export sales, surpassing our initial KPI target of RM34 million," Abu Bakar said. The achievement demonstrated the effectiveness of MATRADE's targeted approach in facilitating meaningful business connections and generating tangible results for Malaysian companies.

"Building on this strong momentum, we have nearly tripled the delegation size this year to 26 companies. This expansion reflects growing interest among Malaysian companies in the Cambodian market and our continued efforts to connect them with new business opportunities," he added.

Strategic Objectives

MATRADE said the mission is aimed at helping Malaysian companies secure new business opportunities, diversify their export markets, and establish stronger commercial linkages in Cambodia. The strategic importance of market diversification has become increasingly apparent as global trade faces headwinds from geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions. Cambodia offers Malaysian companies a promising alternative market with significant growth potential.

During the four-day mission, MATRADE will organise a business seminar to be officiated by Cambodia's Minister of Commerce, offering participating Malaysian companies insights into the country's business environment and commercial landscape. The high-level engagement signals the importance both countries place on strengthening their economic partnership.

The participating companies will engage with potential buyers, importers, and distributors while gaining deeper insights into Cambodia's market conditions and business environment. The programme will also feature speakers from Cambodia's Ministry of Commerce, the General Department of Customs and Excise, and the Malaysian Business Chamber in Cambodia, who will share perspectives on trade regulations, customs clearance procedures, market trends, and business opportunities.

Facilitating Business Connections

The delegation will take part in pre-arranged business-to-business meetings with potential Cambodian importers, distributors, and business partners, as well as targeted visits to key commercial and distribution hubs across Phnom Penh. These carefully curated engagements are designed to maximize the value of the mission for participating companies, providing them with direct access to decision-makers and potential partners.

The B2B meetings are particularly valuable, as they offer Malaysian companies the opportunity to establish relationships with Cambodian counterparts who have a deep understanding of the local market. These connections can facilitate market entry, help navigate regulatory requirements, and provide valuable insights into consumer preferences and business practices.

Cambodia's Economic Transformation

Cambodia's economic trajectory has been remarkable. Once one of the poorest countries in the region, it has transformed into a lower-middle-income economy with aspirations of becoming a high-income nation by 2050. The country's success has been driven by garment manufacturing, tourism, construction, and more recently, a growing digital economy.

The Cambodian government has implemented a series of reforms aimed at improving the business environment, including streamlining customs procedures, reducing bureaucracy, and investing in infrastructure. These efforts have made the country increasingly attractive to foreign investors and exporters.

The country's growing middle class represents a significant opportunity for Malaysian exporters. As disposable incomes rise, Cambodian consumers are increasingly seeking higher-quality products, many of which Malaysian companies are well-positioned to supply. The demographic dividend with a young and growing population further adds to the market's long-term potential.

The Export Acceleration Mission represents a strategic effort by MATRADE to strengthen Malaysia's economic ties with Cambodia and help Malaysian companies tap into the country's growth potential. As trade between the two nations continues to expand, the mission is expected to generate significant business opportunities and contribute to the overall growth of bilateral trade.

The 2026 mission builds on a legacy of successful engagement between the two countries. With strong government support, proactive trade promotion efforts, and growing business interest, the Malaysia-Cambodia economic partnership appears poised for continued growth in the coming years.

The surge in bilateral trade between Malaysia and Cambodia reflects the growing importance of the relationship and the opportunities available for Malaysian companies in the Cambodian market. MATRADE's leadership in facilitating the Export Acceleration Mission demonstrates the Malaysian government's commitment to helping local exporters expand their reach and diversify their markets.

As Malaysia continues to strengthen its ties with Cambodia, the benefits of this partnership are likely to extend beyond trade to include greater investment flows, technology transfer, and people-to-people connections. The 26 companies participating in the mission are at the forefront of this exciting new chapter in Malaysia-Cambodia economic relations.
