Kristen Stewart and Dylan Meyer on Their 'Stoner Buddy Comedy' 'The Wrong Girls': 'We're Both Art Brain Freaks'
The married couple opens up about their seamless collaboration on Meyer's directorial debut, a female-led stoner comedy that took 14 years to make.

Kristen Stewart and Dylan Meyer are opening up about their connection on-screen and off. "Making stuff together, what a way to get to know someone, man," says Stewart, 36, of The Wrong Girls (in theaters now). A passion project written years ago and directed by Meyer, 38, in her feature directorial debut, the indie film costarring Stewart and Alia Shawkat is one of the only female-led stoner buddy comedies to come out of Hollywood.
"When you have an experience where you feel like you can find a big, huge stride, it just makes you feel f---ing powerful and centered and present and ready to do it again," Stewart exclaims. "I want to get going! It's a really nice feeling to make a movie and feel not tired, but completely and utterly energized and a little hop in your step."
A Passion Project Decades in the Making
That inspiration is what The Wrong Girls accomplished for its Los Angeles-based crew and Stewart, Meyer and Maggie McLean's production company Nevermind Pictures, says the Oscar nominee. "Even though Dylan is like, 'I'm wrecked,' " she adds with a laugh. "She worked really hard."
Noting that The Wrong Girls' development spanned a whopping 14 years, Meyer recalls that it was Stewart who encouraged her to direct it. Since the days when "we were falling in love," the pair have shared every idea they're working on, Meyer says, "because we're both art brain freaks."
But "there were nothing but roadblocks and challenges," she explains. "Getting your first movie financed as a woman is nearly impossible." Nevermind Pictures is trying "to champion first-time female directors or women who maybe are on their second film. So we're trying to be the change we want to see in the world and to see opportunities in certain things that haven't been allowed to exist. And those are the things that are fresh and I believe will save our business."
A Shared Philosophy on Filmmaking
Stewart shares that philosophy. "It's just this time in our lives," she says of her and Meyer's chosen family of filmmakers. "We're just ready to open our mouths and say things. Because we're old! … I am very, very, very stoked to be living in a time where girls are a little bit more encouraged to make movies because they're really f---ing good at it."
Meyer being "really good at" filmmaking, says Stewart, made her first time working with her then-fiancée in a director role "the f---ing easiest thing." The two tied the knot on April 20, 2025, after filming on The Wrong Girls had wrapped and amid finalizing Stewart's directorial debut The Chronology of Water.
"Already having a history of collaboration made it easier to step into this dynamic," agrees Meyer. "We didn't have any sort of pre-conversations about, 'How's this going to go?' I do think that having collaborated on so many other things offered us a sort of shorthand to navigate when things are pressurized."
The Importance of Community and Friendship
Working with Stewart and pals amid such pressure is "definitely the dream," Meyer adds. "It's certainly a high-stakes version of your life to have everything integrated in that way. And that can be frightening in moments because you feel like this ecosystem you've created is the most important thing and we're all a part of it and any damage to it is very frightening. But I think that [The Wrong Girls] in particular is about friendship. So having a bunch of people who were friends working on it was important."
The film, costarring LaKeith Stanfield, Tony Hale, Zack Fox, Kate McKinnon and Geena Davis, plus Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani voicing the titular characters' cats, is a testament to the power of community and collaboration. For Stewart and Meyer, the project represents not only a creative milestone but also a celebration of the relationships that sustain them.
A New Chapter for Nevermind Pictures
The production company Nevermind Pictures, founded by Stewart, Meyer, and McLean, is dedicated to championing fresh voices and underrepresented perspectives in filmmaking. With The Wrong Girls, they have delivered on that promise, creating a film that is both entertaining and meaningful.
The film's release marks a significant moment for the company and for the team behind it. As Stewart noted, the experience of making The Wrong Girls has left her feeling energized and ready for more. For Meyer, the project represents a long-awaited opportunity to share her vision with the world.
The Wrong Girls is a labor of love that has finally made its way to the big screen. For Stewart and Meyer, it represents the culmination of years of creative collaboration, personal growth, and a shared commitment to telling stories that matter. As they continue to build their careers and their lives together, their partnership remains a source of inspiration and strength.
