Kevin Hunter Jr.: Wendy Williams' 'Hard-Won Child' and the Complicated Heir to a TV Empire

From a traumatic birth to a tumultuous childhood, public feuds, and a front-row seat to his mother's devastating decline, here is the story of Wendy Williams' only son.

Kevin Hunter Jr. is the only child of Wendy Williams, the former queen of daytime talk television, and her ex-husband, Kevin Hunter. He was born on August 8, 2000. Wendy famously calls him her "hard-won child," a phrase she adopted after a grueling journey to motherhood that included several miscarriages, two of which occurred at five months. For Wendy, his birth was a miracle she never took for granted.

"I fought tooth and nail to be a mother. I suffered several miscarriages, including two at five months. That's when you have the clothes already picked out, the nursery is already painted. They ask you Do you want a funeral or do you want the cremation? We went through that not once but twice... So our Kevin is a hard-won child."

Growing Up in the Spotlight

Kevin Jr. grew up in the shadow of his mother's monumental fame. Despite the glitz of her career, Wendy and her then-husband, Kevin Hunter Sr., tried to provide a stable upbringing. However, the marriage was turbulent. Wendy filed for divorce in 2019 after allegations that her husband had fathered a child with another woman. The divorce was finalized in 2020, and Kevin Jr. was caught in the middle.

He attended a university in Miami, and Wendy revealed on The View that he was adjusting well to his parents' split.

"I'm in a good space; he only wants to see me and his dad happy."

The 2019 Altercation with His Father

The tension between Kevin Jr. and his father boiled over in May 2019. Just a month after Wendy filed for divorce, Kevin Jr. was arrested and charged with simple assault after an altercation with his father in a New Jersey parking lot. Reports claimed that the fight began when Kevin Jr. called his father "a bitch," leading to a physical scuffle where Hunter Sr. put his son in a headlock and Kevin Jr. punched his father in the face.

Hunter Sr. did not want to press charges, and the case was eventually dismissed.

A Rocky Road: Substance Abuse and Legal Troubles

Wendy has been open about her son's struggles. In a 2018 interview, she revealed that Kevin Jr. had become addicted to K2, a synthetic cannabis. She described the ordeal as horrifying, stating that he "became someone I didn't even know". Fortunately, he was able to recover.

Standing by His Mother Amid Health Crises

Kevin Jr. has remained a constant presence during Wendy's most difficult years, often acting as her protector. He featured prominently in the 2024 Lifetime documentary, Where is Wendy Williams?. In the doc, he expressed deep concern about her well-being and the quality of her court-ordered guardianship. He pushed back against suggestions that he was mishandling her finances and voiced frustration at the people he felt were enabling her.

"The guardian has not done a good job of protecting my mom."

In 2025, however, the relationship became strained. Wendy publicly accused Kevin Jr. of financial mismanagement. She claimed he had been using her credit cards for personal expenses. In a now-deleted Mother's Day post, she omitted any mention of her son, signaling that their relationship had soured.

A Rare Public Appearance: College Graduation

Despite the turmoil, Wendy made a rare public appearance in December 2024 to celebrate her son's graduation from Florida International University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. She arrived in a motorized scooter, dressed to the nines to celebrate his achievement.

Life Today

Kevin Jr. prefers to stay out of the limelight, but he remains a central figure in his mother's ongoing saga. He has stepped back from public commentary, choosing to focus on his own life as he navigates the complexities of being the heir to a complicated family empire.
