Kelly Clarkson: Dressing by Mood, Dreaming of Stagecoach and Giving Back as a Mentor

First-Time Festival Performer Chooses Outfits on Show Day, Finds Full-Circle Joy Guiding The Voice Contestants

Kelly Clarkson has never been one to play a part, and that extends to what she wears on stage. The Grammy-winning star has revealed she picks her performance outfits based entirely on how she feels the day of the show, a refreshingly unscripted approach that will carry over to her highly anticipated first appearance at the Stagecoach Country Music Festival in 2027. Speaking openly with Seth Meyers during a late-night interview on September 21, Clarkson admitted she doesn’t even know what she’ll wear yet and that uncertainty is exactly how she prefers it.

“I’m kind of the person that can show up in sequins and bedazzled head to toe, or I could show up in jeans and a T-shirt and feel just as confident,” she explained with characteristic warmth. “I don’t know where I’m at that day, Seth. I don’t know what I feel.” When Meyers confirmed that she truly decides on the day itself, she laughed and agreed: “Pretty much. We’ll have maybe five very different outfits on standby, everything from full glam to something totally laid-back, and I’ll pick the one that matches my energy the moment I’m about to walk out. I might be bloated, Seth! I’m not going to force something that doesn’t feel right.”

She summed up her philosophy simply: “I’m a mood person… Yay, follow the rollercoaster!” It is an attitude that has defined her career, refusing to be boxed in, prioritising comfort and authenticity over expectations, and letting her genuine self shine through every performance.

Making Stagecoach Memories: A Debut Year in the Making

Clarkson’s upcoming appearance at Stagecoach marks a genuine milestone in her artistic journey. The iconic festival returns to the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, from April 23–25, 2027, with country music legends Garth Brooks and rising stars Riley Green and Zach Top leading the bill as headliners. Clarkson joins a sprawling, genre-defying lineup that reflects the broadening landscape of modern country and Americana alongside HARDY, Willie Nelson & Family, Brothers Osborne, Shaboozey, Dasha, Kelsea Ballerini, Stephen Wilson Jr., Journey, Pitbull, Carin León, Matchbox Twenty, Cameron Whitcomb, and many more.

For Clarkson, stepping onto the Stagecoach stage is more than just another date on a calendar; it is a homecoming of sorts. Though her music has spanned pop, rock, and soul throughout her career, her roots and her voice have always carried the warmth and grit of country music. This will be her first time performing at the festival, and the excitement is palpable even if the wardrobe remains a delightful mystery. Whatever she wears sequins or denim, heels or boots, the performance will be unmistakably her: powerful, heartfelt, and completely in the moment.

Full Circle: From Idol Winner to The Voice Mentor

Beyond festivals and fashion, Clarkson is finding profound purpose back where it all began on the coaching panel of The Voice. Her return to the show follows the conclusion of her beloved daytime talk show, which wrapped its seven-season run on August 31. Now, alongside fellow coaches Adam Levine, Queen Latifah, and Riley Green, she is guiding a new generation of singers through the competition and seeing her own younger self in every hopeful who walks through the doors.

Her connection to the experience is deeply personal. Clarkson rocketed to fame as the very first winner of American Idol, a breakthrough that launched one of the most successful careers in modern music but the journey was not without its loneliness and uncertainty. “It’s a full-circle thing for me that always keeps me coming back,” she shared. “I didn’t have anyone there right after I won, no one who had been through exactly what I was going through, who could tell me, ‘I know how this feels.’”

That absence of the voice she needed but didn’t have shapes every conversation she has with her team now. “I think it’s a really beautiful thing to be able to look someone in the face and go, ‘You can make something from this. You can make a living doing what you love but it’s hard work,” she said. She doesn’t sugarcoat the reality of the industry, but neither does she diminish the dream. Her mentorship is rooted in honesty: celebrating the joy of making music while preparing them for the resilience it will take to sustain it.

If she could travel back in time and speak to that 20-year-old version of herself, fresh from victory and stepping into the unknown, the advice would be gentle but firm: “Don’t be so fearful when you’re walking in that room.” It is a lesson she has carried through every high and low, and one she is proud to pass forward.

Authenticity as Strength

In an entertainment industry that often rewards polish over truth, Clarkson’s refusal to present a perfected version of herself has become her greatest superpower. Choosing an outfit on the day because “that’s just where I’m at” is not indecision; it is integrity. It is saying: I am human, I change, I feel, and I will not pretend to be someone I’m not just for the cameras.

That same authenticity infuses everything she does, from how she dresses to how she leads. Whether she is dazzling a festival crowd in sequins, singing her heart out in a simple T-shirt, or sitting across from a nervous young artist and saying “I’ve been there,” Kelly Clarkson remains exactly who she has always been: real, relatable, and remarkably generous.

As she prepares for the lights of Indio and the thrill of the Stagecoach stage, she carries with her more than just a voice that can move mountains. She carries the certainty that being yourself unapologetically, moodily, beautifully is the most powerful thing any artist can be. And for the contestants who look to her for guidance, she is living proof: you don’t have to wear a mask to shine.
