Kacey Musgraves Just Canceled Her Own Tour's Opening Night
Three shows scrapped, including the Chicago kickoff. No explanation from Musgraves. No comment from her team. Here's what we actually know.

Kacey Musgraves' Middle of Nowhere tour was supposed to launch in Chicago on August 20. Instead, that show along with two others has quietly disappeared from the schedule, and nobody's explaining why.
The Shows That Got Pulled
Three dates from Musgraves' upcoming tour have been canceled: the Chicago opening-night performance originally set for August 20, a Boston show scheduled for August 29, and a Brooklyn, New York, concert planned for September 2. That's according to reporting from the Daily Mail, and the cancellations were confirmed further when a Reddit user shared a screenshot of an email notifying ticket holders about the Boston cancellation specifically, which stated refunds would be automatically issued.
That refund detail is worth noting it suggests this isn't a postponement with a rescheduled date attached, but a genuine cancellation of those specific shows.
What Makes This Slightly Less Alarming (But Still Confusing)
Here's an important piece of context: all three affected cities Chicago, Boston, and Brooklyn had concerts scheduled across multiple nights as part of this tour run. According to Musgraves' official website, each city still has tickets available for the alternate dates that weren't canceled.
So this isn't a case of Musgraves skipping entire cities on her tour route. It's specifically the opening-night show in Chicago, plus one date each in Boston and Brooklyn, that got pulled while other performances in those same markets remain on the books. That distinction matters, but it also makes the situation more puzzling rather than less. If this were a broader issue affecting an entire city or region, there might be an obvious external explanation (venue problems, logistics, routing conflicts). Instead, it looks more like something specific to those particular nights.
The Silence Is Doing A Lot Of Talking
Musgraves, 37, has not addressed the cancellations publicly as of this reporting. When PEOPLE reached out to a representative for the singer, they declined to comment.
That combination no public statement from Musgraves herself, and an explicit "no comment" from her team rather than even a generic statement citing "scheduling conflicts" or "production reasons" is the kind of silence that tends to generate more speculation than a vague explanation would. Artists cancel shows for all sorts of reasons: illness, family emergencies, production or venue issues, scheduling conflicts with other commitments. A declined comment doesn't confirm anything specific, but it does suggest whatever's happening isn't something the team is ready, or willing, to discuss publicly yet.
The Tour This Is All Attached To
Musgraves first announced the Middle of Nowhere tour back in April, laying out a substantial North American run with stops including Toronto, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Nashville, Atlanta, Austin, Salt Lake City, and Los Angeles, before wrapping on October 27 at Seattle's Climate Pledge Arena.
The tour supports her sixth studio album, also titled Middle of Nowhere, which was released on May 1. Opening acts announced for various dates throughout the run include Midland, Flatland Cavalry, Carter Faith, Estevie, Charles Wesley Godwin, William Beckmann, Gabriella Rose, and The Brudi Brothers.
The Album Behind The Tour
Middle of Nowhere features collaborations with Gregory Alan Isakov, Billy Strings, Miranda Lambert, and Willie Nelson a genuinely notable lineup of collaborators spanning multiple corners of the folk, country, and Americana world.
Musgraves has spoken candidly about the personal place she was in while making the record. "The bulk of this record was made during the longest single period of my life," she said in a statement at the time of the album's release.
She elaborated further on what that period of solitude actually meant to her: "I found that for the first time, it actually felt incredible being alone and existing in a space not defined by anyone else. I became fascinated with the concept of liminal space, both geographical and emotional."
"We don't linger in these transitional, empty spaces long enough and rush to define where or whatever is next," she continued. "I became so at ease with being in the 'middle of nowhere' in many senses and sitting in the un-comfort of the undefined. I had a lot of time for creative ambling and leaning into myself in different ways; horses, humor, writing with my early collaborators again, and living out my very simple, inspired life between Texas, Tennessee and Mexico."
What This Means For Ticket Holders Right Now
If you had tickets to the Chicago opening night, the Boston August 29 show, or the Brooklyn September 2 concert, refunds are reportedly being issued automatically based on the email shared on Reddit. Beyond that, ticket holders for those specific dates are currently left without an explanation, though alternate show dates remain available in all three cities for anyone still hoping to catch Musgraves on this tour.
Right now, this story is defined almost entirely by what isn't known. Three shows are gone. Refunds are going out. Musgraves hasn't said anything publicly, and her team has explicitly declined to comment when asked directly. Given how personal and reflective her recent public statements about this album and this period of her life have been, it's reasonable to wonder whether whatever's behind these cancellations is similarly personal but without any actual confirmation from Musgraves or her camp, that remains speculation rather than reporting.
For now, the rest of the Middle of Nowhere tour, including the October 27 closer in Seattle, remains on the books as scheduled.
