For some people, the thought of publishing a book is scary!
Publishing a book is not the scary part...for many it is actually starting the writing the process but it does not have to be the hardest part!
Take Baby Steps
But first, let’s look at the big picture. What does it take to write a book? It happens in three phases:
1.) Phase One-"The Beginning"- You have to start writing. This sounds obvious, but it may be the most overlooked step in the process. You write a book by deciding first what you’re going to write and how you’re going to write it. This phrase is very important. It is also very important to have a great "Writing Space!"
Concept – Writing It Out
This is where it all begins . It's important to think about the following for your book:
- Book Genre /Type
- Your Writing Space / Time
- How to keep track of your ideas
- Research -what have others done
- Making the commitment to the process
- Helpful Resources
Tips to Creating Your Writing Space
- Establish your writing space
- Assemble your writing tools
- Depending on where your space is
- Laptop, pad, paper clips, stapler
- Break the project into small pieces
- Settle on the “Big Idea”
- No room in the market for small ideas
- Construct an outline
- Set a firm writing schedule (firm deadline)
- Conduct your research
- Write a compelling, reader-first, opener – You need a line that’s going to immediately catch the eye of the reader.
- Common Types: Surprising, Dramatic Statement, Philosophical, Poetic
- Fill Your Story with conflict and tension
- You want them to keep turning the page. You’ve got to write every page like this
- Turn off your internal editor while you’re writing your first draft
- Now is not the time to edit your work. Give yourself time to get the story down
- Get your thoughts out!
- You can edit grammatically later and there are tools to help with that.
- Don’t Quit!
- You need a great ending!
- Readers need to be left waiting for your next work.
You also have to consider Publishing. Here are some tips:
Tips for The Road to Publishing
Important: Too many self publishers don’t have a publishers deadline, so they fudge on their schedule. Set the schedule and keep it.
2.) Phase Two- "Staying motivated"- Once you start writing, you will face self-doubt and overwhelm and a hundred other adversaries. Planning ahead for those obstacles ensures you won’t quit when they come.
3.) Phase Three-"Finishing" - Nobody cares about the book that you almost wrote. We want to read the one you actually finished, which means no matter what, the thing that makes you a writer is your ability not to start a project, but to complete one.
So the book is done....now what?
