India’s UPI Goes Global: 20+ Countries to Adopt by FY29, Confirms NPCI
India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is set to expand globally, with 20+ countries adopting the system by FY29, as confirmed by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India).

In the year 2024 alone, UPI processed real-time transactions worth ₹80.8 lakh crore ($964 billion), and it surpassed top transaction platforms such as Alipay, PayPal, and Brazil's PIX in volume.
With top countries like the UK, UAE, Singapore, and France integrating UPI, the system is now challenging Visa and Mastercard’s global dominance player.
UPI’s Explosive Growth: By the Numbers
- As per the data from the Business Standard Website, There are 3,729 transactions per second were processed in 2023. a 58% increase from the previous year.
- UPI transactions in July 2024 alone hit ₹20.64 lakh crore ($247 billion).
- According to the RBI Annual Reports 2024-2025, The NPCI and RBI is working on expanding UPI to 20 countries by 2028-29.
- 400+ million users are now on UPI, up from 300 million just a year ago.

According to Rahul Jain, CFO of NTT Data Payments, UPI’s ability to offer zero-cost, instant transactions makes it an ideal alternative to Visa and Mastercard.
With RuPay credit cards now linked to UPI, Indians can tap and pay without needing foreign networks, reducing dependence on American card giants.
These RuPay cards also boost the credit card market and many fintech players doing partnerships with banks and launching new UPI-enabled cards. According to the news from Easemoney India, CSB Bank & Jupiter Launched the EDGE RuPay Credit Card that offering upto 10% Cashback on top e-commerce platforms of india such as Amazon, Myntra, and Flipkart.

- UAE, Singapore, Mauritius, and France already support UPI transactions.

UPI’s Competitive Edge Over Visa & Mastercard
Unlike Visa and Mastercard, which charge transaction fees ranging from 1.5% to 3%, UPI transactions remain free or nearly cost-free. This cost efficiency is encouraging governments and businesses worldwide to adopt UPI-like payment systems.
Moreover, UPI’s interoperability allows seamless payments across bank accounts, mobile wallets, and even cryptocurrencies. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is actively working on integrating UPI with CBDCs (Central Bank Digital Currencies), a move that could further disrupt traditional financial models.
