I used to think building a side income required a perfect routine and plenty of free time...

That belief made it harder for me to start because my situation was the opposite of ideal. I was working nights, dealing with irregular sleep, and usually feeling tired during the hours most people use to build something on the side.

So for a long time, I told myself I would start when life became easier.

But that never really happened.

At some point, I realized I was waiting for conditions that were not coming. So I decided to work with what I already had instead of waiting for a better version of my schedule.

That is when things started to change.

I did not build a complicated system. I built something simple that fit around my energy and timing.

My days were not consistent, but I found a rhythm that worked within the chaos.

After a night shift, I would usually come home and sleep. I did not try to force productivity right after work because I knew I would not be able to focus properly. Instead, I treated recovery as part of the process.

When I woke up, I had a small window of time where my mind felt clearer. That became my main working period.

It was not long. Usually just one to two hours.

During that time, I focused on one simple task related to my side income. Sometimes it was writing. Sometimes it was planning ideas. Sometimes it was improving something I had already created.

I stopped trying to do everything in one sitting.

That was important because earlier I would get overwhelmed by the idea of needing to make big progress every day. Once I reduced it to small focused actions, it became easier to stay consistent.

On days when I felt completely drained, I did not force deep work. Instead, I would do lighter tasks. Things that still moved me forward but did not require much energy. Even small actions kept the habit alive.

That was one of the biggest changes for me.

I stopped thinking in terms of perfect days and started thinking in terms of maintained progress.

Even if I only did something small, it still counted as showing up.

Over time, this simple structure started building momentum. I was not working more hours, but I was working more consistently within the time I actually had.

Slowly, my side income started forming from those small efforts.

Not immediately, and not in a dramatic way, but gradually.

A piece of content would perform better than expected. An idea would turn into something useful. Small results started appearing in between the shifts of my main job.

What surprised me most was that my schedule did not need to be perfect for progress to happen.

It just needed to be repeatable.

I also learned that working nights actually gave me something valuable. It forced me to be intentional with my time. I could not waste energy on unnecessary tasks because I simply did not have enough of it.

That limitation helped me focus.

Looking back, the biggest mistake I made was thinking I needed more time before I could start. In reality, I just needed a simple system that worked with the time I already had.

My exact schedule was not special.

It was just consistent enough to build something slowly in the background while I was still working my main job.

And that is what eventually made the difference.
