The phrase “Not everyone gets this opportunity” seems perfect for the international students who get a chance to complete higher studies in the USA. Every year, more than a million students move to the United States of America, the land of cultural diversity and freedom, for studying in world-renowned universities. These students comprise citizens of various countries across the continents.

The international students enrolled in an academic or English language training program in any of the educational institutions approved by the SEVP (Student Exchange and Visitor Program) are granted an F1 visa. This type of visa confers a non-immigrant student status to the visa holders. International students holding an F1 visa experience certain advantages and disadvantages.

Are you willing or planning to get F1 Visa?

If you are one of those visa aspirants who wish to avail an F1 visa for gaining high-quality education in the USA, then you need to pull your socks up, as the regulations have become stricter. Along with visa requirements, you should also learn about the rights and responsibilities of an F1 student.

One of the facets of holding an F1 student visa is the authorization to work in the country before and/or after the completion of studies. You get a legal right to acquire OPT, i.e., Optional Practical Training in the field related to the major area of study. But you must maintain lawful F1 status throughout your stay in the USA.

Performing OPT jobs for international students enable you to gather experience, earn money, and build professional connections.

Do you want to know more about OPT?

OPT or Optional Practical Training is one of the ways available to F1 student visa holders for working in the United States of America. Other ways are on-campus employment and curricular practical training (CPT). Though OPT and CPT are different in a few aspects, both of them fall under the category of off-campus employment.

Other than this, international students, who face economic hardship that they were not aware of before joining the program, can also accept on-campus and off-campus employment opportunities. You need to abide by the rules governing your employment.

Students taking up on-campus employment can start working from the first semester of their degree program. But the students working due to economic hardship or taking up off-campus employment in the form of OPT/CPT jobs can work only after being enrolled in a course or program for one academic year on a full-time basis. In exceptional cases, where employment has to be started immediately as per the requirement of the curriculum, students can begin working in their first year itself.
